What is your go-to approach for cognitive behavioral therapy?

My go-to approach for cognitive behavioral therapy is to break things down into small and manageable steps that clients want to incorporate into daily life for change.

What tools do you teach in cognitive behavioral therapy?

I teach the following in cognitive behavioral therapy:

  • Reframing (an example: How are problems and mistakes opportunities?)
  • Noticing how you feel and think (What are you thinking and feeling day-to-day?)
  • Planning fun and things to look forward to, as you are more likely to make progress when you focus on both change and finding pleasure in each day.
  • Expression of feelings (practicing naming and expressing feelings in healthy ways)
  • Learning and utilizing coping skills (utilizing quiet time, support systems, exercise, breathing, mindfulness, etc.)
  • Looking at and utilizing a support system (Who are you able to count on, are you utilizing these supports, and do you want or need to grow your support system?)
  • Self-esteem
  • Positive self-talk (Looking at and improving the messages you give yourself)
  • Making and achieving goals (Making realistic and attainable goals and breaking them into manageable pieces)

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in cognitive behavioral therapy?

When a client is feeling more successful in daily life, reducing anxiety or stress, and feeling more positive, I know we are making meaningful progress.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement cognitive behavioral therapy?

Challenge yourself to notice and change the negative messages you give yourself each day, as this is a huge and important step.

What should someone do to prepare for starting cognitive behavioral therapy?

Think about your daily challenges and goals and come in knowing that you have the ability to make the changes you desire.

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
