Dialectical behavior therapy (or DBT) can traditionally be very structured, involve a lot of worksheets and homework, and overall emphasizes the theme that two seemingly opposite thoughts and feelings can exist at the same time.
Some common DBT skills involve mindfulness strategies to increase emotional regulation, communication skills to state needs and feelings to others in an assertive way, and aspects of cognitive behavioral therapy which is meant to bring awareness to our thought patterns and challenge them when necessary.
A client makes meaningful progress in DBT when they are able to recognize that multiple feelings can exist at the same time, they are more easily able to challenge and reframe distressing thoughts, and they are able to sit with uncomfortable feelings and trust that everything is safe and okay.
DBT typically involves a lot of homework and worksheets to help clients keep track of their emotions and practice reframing their thoughts. Additionally, there are a lot of mindfulness resources that are thankfully very available and normalized these days that clients can practice regularly outside of sessions.
To prepare for their first DBT session, a client can expect to learn what types of skills are usually taught and that they will likely get homework to do outside of sessions.

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) have distinct purposes and aren’t inherently superior or inferior to one another.
