About
I am passionate about helping young adults as they adjust to new lifestyles with their own struggles in order to live more meaningful lives. I specialize in depression, anxiety, self-esteem, and life transitions using effective strategies.
Chris Furter is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) working under supervision and direction. He is passionate about helping young adults adjust to new or different lifestyles, each with their own struggles, in order to live more meaningful lives. Chris specializes in depression, anxiety, self-esteem, and life transitions using effective strategies.
Chris completed his Master of Arts (MA) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Liberty University. Prior to graduate school, he put his Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Economics to work in financial services. Chris utilizes several treatment approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), gestalt, existential, and Rogerian (person-centered) in addition to others. Chris has knowledge and exposure to multiple fields of study and their work-related outcomes, which allows him to understand the difficulties of various industries as well as career transitions after graduation. He enjoys meditating in his spare time and has used that experience to help clients struggling with depression and anxiety.
As a counselor working under direction and supervision, Chris enjoys working with people to help them feel heard and valued. Providing clients with a space where they can be their authentic selves is what he strives to do. While his path to counseling has been unorthodox, Chris realized therapy is his true calling upon finding that the most joy in his previous job came from interacting with clients to improve their lives. If you are ready to take the first step, schedule an appointment with him today!

My preferred approach to counseling children combines client-centered therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). In client-centered therapy, I establish a nonjudgmental environment where children can openly express their thoughts and feelings. This fosters a sense of being heard and understood. CBT techniques are introduced to help children identify and address any distorted beliefs that lead to distorted thought patterns. This combined approach aims to enhance self-awareness and empower children to use beliefs to navigate their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors more effectively.
I educate children about the concept of ego personality and its dynamic flow. By understanding that beliefs significantly influence their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, children begin to recognize the power of their perspectives on situations and people around them. I emphasize to children that small changes in their perspectives can lead to significant improvements in their overall quality of life.
I can observe a child's progress when they become more confident in their capacity to manage their emotions independently. They also show increased awareness of unhelpful beliefs and develop the ability to choose alternative beliefs that better serve their growth and well-being.
I motivate children clients to reference visual representations of the CBT triangle. This aids them in understanding how their perspectives on situations and people directly influence their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. I encourage them to memorize this framework and integrate it into their daily routine to effectively restructure beliefs to be more helpful.
A child can prepare for their initial therapy session by grasping the counselor's role in providing a secure environment for them to express themselves openly and honestly. Together with the counselor, they collaborate to improve their overall well-being.
Child therapy, also known as counseling for kids, helps young individuals better understand and manage the challenges that affect their mental health. Common challenges amongst kids include behavioral issues, trauma, bullying, depression, and anxiety. All ages of children can attend and benefit from child therapy at Thriveworks Duluth.
Child therapy works by using multiple techniques tailored to fit the child’s needs based on their age group, their challenges, and the severity of their challenges. It might involve play therapy for younger kids or cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, art therapy, and others for varying ages. In any case, Thriveworks child therapists in Duluth, GA have the expertise and experience to help kids at their level.
Child therapy is a type of therapy meant for clients within a specific age group, while play therapy is an approach to therapy that helps children with self-expression and stress relief, among others. Play therapy is a technique that is often used in child therapy to help children express what’s running through their minds when they do not have the words to express their thoughts and emotions. It can get children to express what’s wrong, what might be causing unwanted behaviors, or what they might need in a way that is accessible to them so that therapists can then work to treat the issue.
It’s not always obvious when a child should see a therapist for their behavior, though in the midst of challenges like divorce, loss, bullying, and other mental health conditions, it’s often a good idea to seek it out. Common behaviors that can indicate a need for child therapy include separation anxiety, bedwetting (at inappropriate ages), and agitation/excessive irritability — especially if it reaches a point of physical violence.
Cognitive behavioral therapy at Thriveworks in Duluth, GA is one of the best types of therapy for children. However, it can be administered in child therapy sessions in a variety of ways that are more accessible to young minds, such as play therapy.
Child therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
The length of child therapy depends on your child’s needs as well as the goals that you and their therapist might have for them. Generally, child therapy sessions will last for several months.
