What kind of therapist is best for couples?

At Thriveworks, Couples/marriage therapy is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples.

What is the Gottman Method of couples therapy?

The Gottman Method of couples therapy is a research-supported approach designed to enhance relationships by bolstering the bond between partners, resolving conflicts, and fostering shared meaning in their relationship through comprehensive assessments and tailored interventions that improve communication, trust, and the overall health of the partnership.

How to tell if I need couples therapy?

If you’re facing persistent relationship problems, communication breakdowns, or unresolved conflicts that are impacting your emotional well-being and happiness, Couples/marriage therapy may be beneficial for you.

Should every couple go to couples therapy?

While marriage and couple’s counseling is typically recommended for couples who are experiencing persistent or severe relationship issues, any relationship can benefit from attending these sessions.

Is couples & marriage counseling conducted in person or online?

Marriage and couples counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does couples & marriage counseling last?

On average, couples attend marriage and couples counseling for 12 weeks. However, couples & marriage counseling may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

Need more help deciding?

Often, couples are so close to a problem that they find it hard to find an obvious solution. That’s where relationship counseling can help. Bringing in an unbiased, third-party viewpoint can help partners better understand what’s going on in their relationship. A therapist or counselor can give you the tools you need to deal with your issues and help you get on the same page again.

A couples therapist can help you resolve conflict in your relationship, build intimacy, and improve the way you communicate with each other. At Thriveworks in Arlington, TX, our marriage and family therapists can support you both as you work through your problems so you come out on the other side happier and healthier. Reach out today to schedule your first appointment.

Common Reasons To Seek Out Relationship Counseling

Here are some of the problems that may let you know it’s time to reach out for help:

  • If one of you struggles with addiction or substance abuse
  • If one of you struggles with anger issues
  • If there’s a lack of intimacy in your relationship
  • If there’s a lack of trust between you and your partner
  • If you feel like you aren’t communicating like you once did
  • If a disparity in values is causing hardships
  • If agreements never seem to resolve

If your relationship doesn’t feel the way it once did, help is available. Consider reaching out to a Thriveworks mental health professional in Arlington, TX.

How Does Couples Therapy and Marriage Counseling Work?

Your therapist will start by talking to you as individuals or as a couple to determine the underlying causes of your relationship issues. From there, you will work with your therapist to determine a goal and a timeline.

Every couple’s goals will be different and may change over time. In some cases, the goal may be to argue less. In other instances, it may be to approach divorce in a civil, healthy manner. The form of treatment will largely depend on your desired outcome from couples therapy.

Throughout your sessions, your therapist will help you work on the skills you need to improve your relationship. You may need to focus on communication, trust, stress management, selflessness, patience, or forgiveness, among others. To practice these skills, you may be given assignments to try outside of your appointments. For example, someone struggling to get in touch with their emotions may be asked to keep a journal as a way of building that awareness. A couple desiring more intimacy may be tasked with setting aside time for dates or alone time away from their kids.

I just started seeing Paula St John. I believe today was my fourth session however I do want to emphasize since I've started seeing her. I know that I made the right choice with choosing y'all and she is a wonderful therapist she listens I and I feel she understands me and I like her feedback it's honest as I want to be told the truth, so I know what areas to improve in my life I feel I should have taken the step of seeing a therapist long ago as I have had many events go on throughout my life like trauma stress depression and most of all anxiety. She did introduce me to DBT dialectical behavior therapy which I have been doing it is very difficult still for me to do as it is hard for me to concentrate and just relax in general but we are working on that. I do want to have an actual session with her where she's directing me in the session versus telling me about it and then I do it after we end our regular session because I want to make sure I'm doing it right in general I do like to meditate like I said it's a very difficult for me I do feel a lot of tension and it's very hard to relax and I know it's Mind Over Matter I would highly recommend Thriveworks and I've already mentioned it to some friends of mine. I know I live in San Antonio and she's based out of the Dallas area however, I would love to make an appointment one day and do an in-person session with her along with my seven-year-old daughter and make that just a trip out there. I look forward to my sessions. They really do help! Seeking personal help with a knowledgeable experienced therapist of many years does help. Paula St John is the perfect match for me in regards of what I'm going through.
