Self-esteem counseling is a therapeutic technique that works to improve an individual’s self-esteem and, through that, their overall mental health. Self-esteem counselors will help clients discover the roots of their poor self-esteem and work with them to build it back up and improve their quality of life.
Self-esteem counseling works by addressing thought or behavioral patterns that may be connected to an individual’s low self-esteem and adjusting them to be more helpful and uplifting. Self-esteem can be a frustrating topic because what exactly does good self-esteem mean? It is a very confusing psychological construct. It can mean many different things to many different people and measured very differently. It can impact talking to others, or how you feel about your body. Self-esteem is subjective and usually defined as what you think, believe, and feel about yourself and your own identification and evaluation of worth. It can also mean confidence in yourself. Self-esteem and self-confidence are important issues because it helps you process failure more appropriately and helps you achieve your life goals. It can also help you in relationships with others.
Low self-esteem results from many different types of experiences. Sometimes self-worth can come directly from others, perhaps something someone said to you or something they did to you. For example, being bullied, or physically, emotionally, or sexually abused, or neglected could impact your self-esteem. Sometimes, self-esteem and self-confidence can diminish as a result of a mental health disorder such as anxiety or depression. Sometimes it is difficult to pinpoint exactly what caused your low self-esteem.
Sometimes self-esteem is related to your own thoughts about situations. Sometimes people with low self-esteem and low self-confidence are more sensitive and easily hurt than others, which perpetuates the cycle. Self-esteem often effects the way we act in the world as well. Sometimes people with low self-esteem can sabotage themselves when things are going good because they don’t feel that they are worth it. They are always predicting that things will go badly for them and can have repetitive, self-destructive, and irrational thoughts.
There are many indicators that may suggest a person has self-esteem issues. Some indicators include making verbal comments such as “I’m ugly, I’m not good enough, I hate myself, etc. Some other indicators include wanting to always please others, maintain a particular appearance, being a perfectionist, having difficulty making decisions, constantly apologizing, lack of eye contact, avoiding situations, or even self-destructive behaviors such as substance use, promiscuity, cutting, binging, lying, etc.
