My go-to approach for treating depression is DBT. I prefer DBT because it combines the best of CBT and an intuneness with mind and body.
I teach the following tools in depression counseling: mindfulness, negative and positive thinking, awareness, goals, visual positivity, self-approval (i.e. “You did a great job.”), and art therapy (sometimes clears the mind, opens thinking, fosters nonjudgment/acceptance).
I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when I hear from them what they have noticed is changing, using words and phrases like: “I felt better when...,” “I was surprised to feel the difference between...,” “sleeping better,” and “better energy.”
Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling with reading material, such as CBT or DBT skills training, “The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook” by Bourne, “The Mindful Life Journal” by Adams, and “Mindfulness” by Langer. Also, they can be creative or do outdoor activities.
To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can make a list of your feelings and feeling actions, such as feeling unhappy and crying.
