Pamela is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker practicing for over 30 years in California, New Mexico, and Michigan — where she practices currently. She has expertise in helping individuals cope with life stressors, transitions, depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship issues and marital counseling, family issues, 2SLGBTQIA support, grief and loss, substance abuse, adjustment disorders, ADHD, adjustment to school, mood changes, self-esteem, anger management, postpartum depression, overcoming burn-out, care management, and life coaching. Dialectical behavior therapy improves a client's self-acceptance and emotional regulation. This therapeutic method is best used in clients with borderline personality disorder and also in clients with self-harming behaviors. It is also used in clients who experience intense emotions, and DBT helps clients with a number of other issues as well.
Dialectical behavior therapy teaches clients to accept themselves as they are while also helping them learn to change unhelpful behaviors. Tools utilized include mindfulness, increased interpersonal effectiveness, managing emotions and stress, and emotional regulation.
When clients are making meaningful progress in DBT therapy, they will experience increased contentment and satisfaction, and will also see increased emotional regulation.
Clients can supplement their time in dialectical behavior therapy by utilizing the tools learned in sessions in between appointments.
To prepare for their first DBT session, an individual may identify behaviors they would like to see changed.

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) targets your personal challenges. You may work with your DBT therapist to maintain diary cards to monitor progress, emphasizing validation and support in the therapeutic relationship. DBT follows a stage-based approach, prioritizing crisis reduction initially and life satisfaction.
DBT was initially developed to address the needs of individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, its versatile approach has enabled its application to a wide range of mental health conditions, including but not limited to, anxiety, depression, stress, and anger issues.
The 4 pillars of DBT are mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance.
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) have distinct purposes and aren’t inherently superior or inferior to one another. DBT is most effective for managing emotional regulation, personality disorders, and interpersonal challenges, while EMDR is specifically tailored for individuals with trauma-related conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
