Charlotte Kelsey is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the state of Massachusetts with over 3 years of experience providing clinical assessment and care to adult clients seeking treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, stress management, and life transitions. Charlotte’s passion for therapy started during her time as a patient care technician in a hospital trauma unit. Much of her time was spent at patients’ bedsides, listening to their stories.
It was this experience that led Charlotte to complete her Master of Science degree in mental health counseling at Suffolk University in Boston, MA. As a clinician, she provides a person-centered approach to therapy with a focus on mindfulness-based, cognitive behavioral (CBT), and solutions-focused treatment. She is a steady advocate for sex positivity and a committed ally to the LGBTQIA+ community. She listens without judgment and strives to provide a place for individuals seeking a safer space.
Charlotte is adaptable in her method and pays close attention to each individual’s needs. She fully believes collaborative care is essential in supporting one’s goals and values in life.
You deserve dedicated time with a mental health professional — it can be life-changing.

My go-to approach for helping people in individual therapy is foundationally humanistic, with CBT and DBT-informed interventions. I find the best benefit in combining these approaches because they tackle the issue(s) from all sides. Change can be intimidating to begin with; the humanistic approach helps to take some of the intimidation away, while CBT and DBT provide structure and skills.
I teach the following tools in individual therapy: identifying and harnessing one's core values to build meaning, identifying and challenging cognitive distortions (thoughts) that are often at the center of difficult feelings/relationships, and identifying and regulating physiological manifestations of our emotions (feelings) and reconnecting with meaningful activities (behaviors) that foster a healthy mind and body.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy when they begin to speak of their challenges in the past tense, express more hope for the future, or find it harder to come up with things to talk about in session. At times, they even describe some discomfort at first because feeling better is new to them.
Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy with workbooks, podcasts, apps, support groups, participating in hobbies, exercise, and connecting with social supports or nature. The options are endless, and what feels helpful will be unique to the person.
To prepare for your first individual therapy session, you can jot down your top concerns and what your goal(s) for our work together will be. Also, think of questions you may want to ask me as well. If you have had therapy in the past, it is helpful to share what you liked or not in that experience. Ultimately, committing to showing up is the best way to prepare for what can be the hardest step.
Individual therapy, also known as Individual therapy, allows people to engage in private sessions with a skilled therapist, counselor, or psychologist. The core objective of individual therapy is to establish a secure and confidential setting where you can openly discuss whatever emotional, psychological, or behavioral challenges you face. Through these one-on-one sessions, the client and therapist work together to delve into, comprehend, and ultimately find solutions for the issues at hand in their life.
Individual therapy unfolds in a structured process, commencing with an initial assessment in which the therapist gathers essential information about your history, concerns, and objectives. Together, you and your therapist collaboratively establish specific, attainable goals for your sessions, which can encompass symptom alleviation, personal development, or finding solutions to particular challenges.
