Sometimes it’s hard to reach out for help when life gets difficult! I'm so glad you did, because there are times when you need someone to support and encourage you, hold your concerns and problems in a safe space, and help you work towards fulfillment and peace of mind.
Colette Spaulding is a Licensed MSW and has worked for 20 years in the mental health field. She views each client as a whole person, taking a client-centered approach and collaborating with them to match interventions with their particular needs. She has worked with survivors of abuse, domestic violence, and trauma, as well as clients with mood disorders, anxiety and depression, grief, relationship issues, and major life transitions. She utilizes multiple treatment modalities including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT); Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), as well as psychodynamic, relational, and existential therapy strategies.
Colette completed her Master of Social Work (MSW) at the University of Michigan. Her professional experience includes working with culturally diverse populations in urban and rural settings, with a wide variety of mental health issues and challenges. This, coupled with her innate empathy and non-judgmental stance, enables her to provide her clients with the support and guidance they are seeking.
Colette asks, "What has happened to you?" rather than, "What is wrong with you?" She knows how important it is to establish a safe and compassionate space for her clients to share their unique stories. She will work with you to weave together elements of patterns, strengths, and coping skills; to increase self-awareness, improve your relationships, and promote the healing and growth you desire, to become the best version of you!
You deserve dedicated time with a mental health professional — it can be life-changing.

Trauma therapy is a therapeutic approach that focuses on treating the psychological impact of traumatic events on individuals. Trauma therapy helps people process and heal from their trauma by guiding them through their trauma in a compassionate and supportive way, allowing clients to feel the full scope of what happened to them and eventually move on from the event(s). This process helps people who have experienced trauma find ways to feel safe in their lives.
Trauma therapy will often require individuals to walk through their experiences in a controlled and compassionate setting (unless the client has a dissociative disorder) so that they can fully process the event, an activity that will allow them to move on from what happened and feel safe again. Thriveworks Royal Oak therapists will also help clients learn healthy coping mechanisms to deal with their symptoms outside of therapy.
Thriveworks trauma counseling in Royal Oak, MI is conducted both in person and online through online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
If an individual is working through a single event that occurred during adulthood, they may only need a few months of treatment. However, in instances of childhood trauma or repeated traumatic events, therapy may continue over the course of years. Trauma therapy usually ends when the client believes they have met their therapeutic goals, however long that takes to occur. Thriveworks therapists in Royal Oak, MI will continue to provide care for as long as necessary to help clients meet their therapeutic needs.
PTSD results from distressing traumatic events. It is a mental illness that many people associate with war veterans, but these aren’t the only individuals who suffer from PTSD. For example, victims of domestic abuse, policemen, firefighters, and those diagnosed with a life-threatening illness are at a heightened risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder—the common thread being one’s exposure to a psychologically disturbing event.
If you have been exposed to a traumatic event, it’s incredibly important that you work with a trauma therapist to manage any PTSD symptoms you might have and heal from the disturbing experience. Trauma therapists and PTSD counselors specialize in helping victims of trauma, and they can guide you on the right path of recovery. If you are in Royal Oak or the Oakland area, and you’re looking for trauma therapy, consider working with a trauma therapist at Thriveworks Oakland. If you are haunted by a past trauma, please allow our team to help. You can easily schedule an in-person or online session by calling our office at (947) 217-3010.
Victims of traumatic experiences suffer with day to day duties and activities. For example, they might struggle to concentrate on their work or feel paranoid when they’re at the grocery store; they might struggle to keep up a conversation with others or connect with their significant other. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) comes with specific symptoms and is diagnosed when the individual presents a set of these symptoms for 4 weeks or longer, following the traumatic event. Primary symptoms are as follows:
Trauma treatment often involves trauma therapy and/or PTSD counseling. These therapy modalities are designed to help victims of trauma process their painful past, work through any psychological harm it has caused them, better manage PTSD symptoms, and so on. As with most forms of counseling, the individual’s specific course of treatment will depend heavily on their individual needs and goals. That said, there are a few common approaches to trauma therapy that prove beneficial for these clients:
