What is your go-to approach for teen counseling?

My go-to approach for helping people in teen counseling is to focus first on rapport-building and connection. I find the best benefit in using a strengths-based approach to help this population recognize their self-esteem, which is commonly a challenge during the teen years.

What tools do you teach in teen counseling?

I teach the following tools in teen counseling:

  • Positive self-talk skills: These skills help with self-confidence and benefit teen relationships.
  • Coping tools: I help teens explore a variety of coping tools, especially natural tools such as mindfulness skills. This is important for emotional regulation.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in teen counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in teen counseling when they view themselves more positively and are happy in their relationships.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement teen counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in teen counseling with structured routines and time for self-care.

What should someone do to prepare for starting teen counseling?

To prepare for their first teen counseling session, a teen can ask a trusted adult questions about the process or voice their emotions.

Starting Teen counseling in Richmond

What is teen counseling?

Teen counseling helps young individuals better understand and manage the challenges that affect their mental health. Common challenges amongst teens include anxiety, depression, ADHD, and problematic relationships with food.

How does teen counseling work?

Teen counseling works by using multiple techniques, tailored to fit the teen’s unique needs — based on their age group, their challenges, and the severity of their challenges. It might involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, art therapy, and others for varying ages. In any case, Thriveworks teen therapists in Richmond have the expertise and experience to help young individuals at their level.

Does my teen need therapy?

Signs that teens might need Teen counseling can be very subjective, as they are experiencing many changes and can have intense reactions to them. As parents, you know your child best and are best equipped to judge whether certain reactions are standard behaviors for your teen or whether they might be hinting at a larger problem. Even so, there are a few common signs and events that often point to a need for therapy, such as experiencing divorce or loss, grief, consistent low moods, teens distancing themselves and becoming isolated, losing interest in hobbies, excessive anger or irritability, substance use issues, and suicidal ideation, among others.

Is teen counseling conducted in person or online?

Teen counseling providers at Thriveworks in Richmond, VA offer both in person and online therapy by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does teen counseling last?

The length of teen counseling depends on your teen’s needs as well as the goals that you and their therapist might have for them. Generally, teen counseling sessions will last for several months.

Understanding Common Challenges in Adolescence

What defines adolescence? High school dances, zits, break-ups, and unfortunately, intense emotions are all part of this time of life. Everything feels so important as a teenager. Your son or daughter’s body is changing; they are morphing from a child into an adult. This is often an emotionally painful process. How many of us would want to return to high school? The peer pressure, body issues, popularity problems; all of these things make the time incredibly difficult for many teens.

Teens face many choices in life. They are in the process of defining who they will become, both now and in the future. They are thinking about college, their career, and also their friends and their amount of freedom. All of these things can cause tension in the home. The slammed doors and screaming matches may be nearly more than you can bear. We understand, and can help you create a more peaceful family life, with respect to the changes and choices that your teenager is facing.

Thriveworks makes everything easy and seamless. I appreciate having providers that are able to connect and see progress notes because they are part of the same system. My therapist, Paula O'Leary, is an absolutely wonderful therapist and is helping me transform my life. She is able to work with me in the way I need it and helps me more every single session. Additionally, my Psychiatrist Dr. Ileana Asanache is also spectacular and is the only psychiatrist I've ever felt comfortable with. She listens to my concerns and needs and eases me into every medication/transition so that I am comfortable. This new med regimen she has me on has literally changed my life for the better. I the following diagnoses: Bipolar 2, Anxiety, PTSD, Nightmare Disorder, and we are exploring a SUD disorder as well. They have helped me not just with my mental health, but my addiction, my career, my relationships/boundaries, and overall are helping me improve my life immensely.

I appreciate her identifying my tells in my body language and helping me see them as well. She lets me talk through my experiences. She validates my experiences and has shed light on them with her objective perspective. She was honest enough to tell me when I needed more support and refer me to an IOP program. I am thankful for that. She educates me on her techniques and talks through strategies. .
