About
I believe healing happens through genuine connection, and I strive to create a warm, compassionate space where clients feel truly seen, supported, and empowered to grow.
I’m so glad you’re here! I’m Sue Ann McCray, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Master’s degree from Boston University. I graduated in 2017, and I have 8+ years of experience supporting adolescents, teens, and adults facing trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, stress, relationship challenges, and life transitions. I also work with those in early recovery from substance use. I provide individual therapy, creating a collaborative, reflective space to build insight, resilience, coping skills, and personal growth.
My approach is client-centered, trauma-informed, and grounded in compassion, acceptance, and respect. I use evidence-based methods tailored to each individual’s needs, to help clients feel seen, heard, and empowered to pursue meaningful, lasting growth.
My care style is warm and collaborative. I create a safe, supportive space where you can feel heard and understood as we work toward meaningful change. Together, we’ll build coping skills, resilience, and self-awareness at a pace that feels right for you. You don’t have to face life’s challenges alone—I’m here to support you every step of the way.

Yes, we offer comprehensive psychiatric services to meet your mental health needs.
Psychiatry allows people struggling to manage mental conditions or disorders to get access to medications that will make daily functioning easier, as well as work through any mental factors that might be causing or worsening their condition. Though medications can’t cure mental disorders, medication can make symptoms more manageable, making the process of psychotherapeutic treatment easier and more effective. Psychiatric care can be available through in-person psychiatry and online psychiatry, depending on where you live and your own preferences. However, psychiatric providers at Thriveworks in Norfolk, VA specifically offer online psychiatry to their clients.
A therapist has an education specifically rooted in therapeutic practice, approaches, techniques, and treatment. They cannot prescribe medications for clients, though they often refer clients to psychiatrists for medication management. Psychiatrists are medically trained doctors who specialize in mental health treatment, mainly through medication management and prescription, though they can also practice therapy.
A Psychiatry Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a highly trained and licensed professional who specializes in mental health care. They are qualified to diagnose and treat mental health conditions, prescribe medications, and provide therapy. Psychiatric NPs at Thriveworks are qualified to prescribe medications for a variety of mental health conditions. They work closely with you to develop a personalized treatment plan.
Oftentimes, psychiatrists or psychiatric professionals will perform a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, which involves an in-depth discussion about your symptoms, medical history, and current medications. Once they reach a diagnosis, they may suggest starting certain medications depending on your condition and the intensity of your symptoms.
Yes. At Thriveworks, we offer online-only psychiatry services for optimal comfort and convenience.
Psychiatric services at Thriveworks Norfolk can last for as little or as much time as the client needs to reach their treatment goals, whether that be a month or two or over the course of a year. Treatment length is heavily dependent on the condition(s) being treated, the course of treatment, and the client’s goals for treatment.
Psychiatrists are mental health professionals who can prescribe anxiety medication and provide therapeutic treatment for anxiety, although not all psychiatrists offer therapy. At Thriveworks, medication management occurs via online psychiatry sessions.
Yes, Thriveworks accepts most major insurance plans. We strive to make mental health care accessible and affordable for everyone.
Psychiatric nurse practitioners (NPs) specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of mental disorders. This means they are qualified to work in a variety of settings.
A big difference between psychiatric NPs and their counterparts is that they can prescribe medication to their clients. Often, individuals with the following disorders can benefit from taking psychiatric medications:
Psychiatric NPs can conduct psychological testing as needed to assess their clients. These tests include surveys, self-reports, IQ tests, achievement tests, and others. Then, once the NP has understood and diagnosed the individual’s condition, they can put together a personalized treatment plan.
Thriveworks allows our clients to work with their psychiatric NPs exclusively through online video sessions. There are many benefits to having telehealth sessions versus in-person sessions, which include:
