What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is to normalize the concept of meeting through technology. I find the best benefit of online therapy is the flexibility to meet people on their day in a space that makes them comfortable and meets their scheduling needs.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I teach the following tools in online therapy:

  • Grounding techniques - exercises that may help you refocus on the present moment to distract yourself from anxious feelings.
  • Self-awareness - the ability to see oneself as the object of attention or awareness.
  • Communication skills - give you the ability to effectively and efficiently convey your thoughts and ideas.
  • Empowerment - promotion of the skills, knowledge, and confidence necessary to have greater ability in one’s life.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when a client can self-report improved satisfaction in their life, and it has been a consistent satisfaction.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in online therapy by building a healthy support network, finding activities that bring positivity into their lives, and continuing to commit to skills that help keep them aware of their feelings and needs.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can come as you are. I will do my best to help you work through anything that is making you uncomfortable being in counseling. Your comfort comes first.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

Our Thriveworks therapists at Thriveworks in Orlando, FL accept most major forms of insurance, which means that many of our clients only pay $0-$50 co-pay per session. However, there are also self-pay options that sit around $200 per session, depending on the service and location, for those who are out-of-network.

Need more help deciding?

We get it. You work a full-time job, make dinner every night, juggle having a social life or work out, and barely have time to visit your parents once a week. You are stressed, overworked, and can’t catch a break. You certainly don’t have the time to go to an appointment. However, you wish you had the ability to talk to a counselor from wherever so that way you can get the support you need and let out some steam. Does that sound too good to be true? Well, it’s not! You can get the help you need, where you need it, when you need it.

One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was from a horse master. He told me to go slow to go fast. I think that applies to everything in life. We live as though there aren’t enough hours in the day but if we do each thing calmly and carefully, we will get it done quicker and with much less stress. –Viggo Mortensen

Online Counseling: How Does it Work?

Online counseling is not that much different than traditional in-person counseling. You will receive the same level and quality of care whichever method you choose. For online counseling, there are two options you can pick from. They are:

  1. Phone Counseling: For phone counseling, you will schedule an appointment on the day and time that works best for you. At that decided time, your counselor will give you a call and all you need to do is answer!
  2. Video Counseling: Similarly, you will set up the date and time that works best for you for your video chat. Instead of receiving a phone call from your counselor, you will receive a link (well in advance) to click on. The link will take you over to the chat room where you will have your session. All you need is an electronic device and an internet connection.

Online counseling is a great option to consider, especially if you have a busy schedule. It proves to be an effective and beneficial option for those who choose it. Are you interested in attending therapy via video chat or phone call? We have online therapists who are ready to help you find the happiness and success you are looking for. Reach out today.

What are the Perks of Online Counseling?

Online counseling has a multitude of benefits for clients who choose this route in their mental health journey. One of the biggest reasons why online counseling is so beneficial is its convenience. As we mentioned earlier, we understand that life can get busy and put a strain on your time to get from point A to point B. By choosing online counseling to receive your services, you can choose wherever you want to have your appointment. No more rushing from work to get to your appointment. You can call from your office, while you are waiting in your car, at home, or even the local coffee shop.

Another great reason why you benefit from online counseling is comfortability. Sometimes people may feel pressure when sitting in a room with their counselor for the first time. You might be nervous and feel awkward. Taking away that in-person aspect, some clients open up quicker than they would otherwise. That’s not to say that if you visit your psychologist in person that you are going to receive a different level of care or not make meaningful strides in your mental health journey, it just means that some people prefer to speak virtually. Also as previously noted, you can choose wherever you want to have your session. If you know you have a specific safe space in mind, we want you to be able to speak with your counselor from there.

Can Online Counseling Work for My Concerns?

The short answer is yes! There are so many different reasons to seek out the assistance of a licensed psychologist. Some of those reasons could be:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Family troubles
  • Poor communication skills
  • Self-identity concerns
  • Marriage counseling
  • Life coaching
  • Child therapy
  • Addiction or substance abuse
  • Coping with a physical disability
  • Trauma or PTSD
  • Grief counseling

This is not a complete list of reasons why you might reach out to a counselor. Every person’s situation is unique, and you are no different!

Yeah, therapy is subjective so it's hard to rate a company based on one therapist encounter but I do have to include the company overall because it's essential to my comprehensive review. My therapist tried, was friendly and accommodating but just didn't work for me. The company overall is disjointed and maybe a little too big for proper management. You call a central number to get set up but when it comes to quitting the therapist it is up to you as the patient to do it all. Any attempt to log into the site gets redirected to an email link. The latest CSR I had unfortunately had a thick accent and was not really listening to me and my responses.

Hi I was a prior supervisor for Margaret in California where she did her post degree internship. She was a very skilled clinician who had many kids that were high-risk and lived in low-income families. Her relationship and interactive approach was very successful with these children and families. I was impressed with her skill and abilities. I would highly recommend her. Vicci
