My go-to approach for helping people in couples/marriage counseling is identifying communication patterns and teaching couples specific skills to improve conflict resolution, build intimacy, and strengthen their connection. I also find that incorporating humor into couples counseling helps create a more relaxed atmosphere, encourages openness and understanding, and fosters a sense of teamwork. Humor also promotes healing, hope, and a deeper bond between partners, ultimately facilitating a more positive counseling experience.
I teach the following tools in marriage counseling to help couples improve their communication, resolve conflicts, gain a better understanding of each other, and strengthen their relationship:
Although indicators for progress may differ in relationships, key indicators that a couple is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling is when they have become more aware of negative patterns in their interactions; can articulate how these patterns affect their relationship; can engage in healthier conflict resolution strategies such as discussing issues calmly, brainstorming solutions, and compromising when necessary; and there is increased intimacy and connection.
Clients can supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling by practicing communication skills through role-playing and active listening exercises, cultivating resilience by practicing coping strategies, and planning shared experiences to strengthen bonds with their partner.
To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling session, you can reflect on goals and expectations, assess relationship dynamics by identifying issues and gathering examples, commit to the process by having a mutual agreement to be open-minded, and set a regular schedule for sessions.
Couples therapy and marriage counseling, also known as relationship counseling, helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy and marriage counseling include:
The types of therapy used in couples and marriage counseling include:
At Thriveworks, Couples/marriage therapy is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples.
The Gottman Method of couples therapy is a research-supported approach designed to enhance relationships by bolstering the bond between partners, resolving conflicts, and fostering shared meaning in their relationship through comprehensive assessments and tailored interventions that improve communication, trust, and the overall health of the partnership.
If you’re facing persistent relationship problems, communication breakdowns, or unresolved conflicts that are impacting your emotional well-being and happiness, Couples/marriage therapy may be beneficial for you.
While marriage and couple’s counseling is typically recommended for couples who are experiencing persistent or severe relationship issues, any relationship can benefit from attending these sessions.
Marriage and couples counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.
On average, couples attend marriage and couples counseling for 12 weeks. However, couples & marriage counseling may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.
At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.
Although many people will instinctively choose to try and resolve their problems alone, professional help in the form of couples or marriage counseling can often prove advantageous for both partners. Many couples find that conflict resolution is easier to achieve under the guidance of a counselor who has no connection and no preconceived ideas about their relationship. Couples therapy or marriage counseling allows them to gain some perspective and become better communicators.
If you think that you and your spouse could benefit from some time in marriage counseling or couples therapy, consider reaching out to Thriveworks Orlando, FL. Our therapists and counselors can serve as that necessary third party, and they come uniquely equipped with tools and techniques that are proven to help couples work through their problems and improve their relationships. Couples therapy or marriage counseling is a form of psychotherapy designed to help people involved in an intimate relationship improve their communication with each other and resolve their conflicts. Couples and marriage counseling sessions are typically designed for both partners to attend, although in some cases only one partner may choose to do so in isolation.
Most therapists will focus on teaching the participants how to…
It is important to recognize that couples and marriage therapy won’t offer simple solutions: a counselor is not there to tell partners what to do. The aim of therapy is to educate and allow the couple to reach suitable conclusions on their own.
Many people will perceive couples or marriage counseling as a last resort scenario to save their relationship. The truth is that this type of therapy is often chosen by couples who simply want to keep their relationships healthy, work through any issues that could escalate into serious conflicts in the future, or even to prepare themselves for upcoming marriage. Whether you are in a troubled relationship or looking to develop an even stronger bond with your partner, couples or marriage counseling might be the right option for you.
