My go-to approach for treating depression is acceptance and commitment therapy. I enjoy ACT techniques because there is an emphasis on separating yourself from your thoughts, focusing on values versus just goals, and foinding what you find meaningful in life. Also, I like that it encourages the clinician to prioritize committed action. Mindfulness is also a key component.
I teach the following tools in depression counseling: radical acceptance, discussing what activities increase a positive mood and/or contribute to a low mood, mindfulness (being in the present moment), and values (what makes life meaningful for you).
I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when they are able to remember what makes their life meaningful and engage in committed action, even when their mood is low. If the client is still working towards meaningful goals, that is a good sign of progress.
I encourage you to do the following to supplement time in depression counseling: engage in meaningful activities, remain in contact with your support system, and engage in mindfulness exercises.
To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can try to consider if the depression is due to circumstances (there is a very present stressor contributing to your low mood) or if you feel there is “nothing tangibly wrong” but you still feel a low mood more days than not.
