What is your go-to approach for PTSD/trauma therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in PTSD/trauma therapy is working to reduce the intensity of responses to trauma triggers. I find benefit in helping clients stabilize symptoms while they work to process their trauma in the structured setting of counseling.

What tools do you teach in PTSD/trauma therapy?

In PTSD/trauma therapy, I like to use tools focused on reducing the intensity of symptoms:

  • Deep breathing: Structured breathing to reduce low-level symptoms and aid the effort to avoid more severe responses.
  • Sensory grounding: Use your senses and connect to your body to avoid getting trapped in your head through things like flashbacks, dissociation, and negative thought spirals.
  • Boundaries: In cases where the trauma was caused by an individual (e.g. abuse) rather than a situation (e.g. a traffic accident), learning and practicing boundaries to increase the perception and reality of safety within relationships in the future.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy when they're able to manage their symptoms to reduce functional impairment and calmly discuss the details and factors of their traumatic experience in their own time.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement PTSD/trauma therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in PTSD/trauma therapy by building up a strong support network. Feeling supported, loved, and safe is one the most significant protective factors against worsening trauma symptoms, and not something I can provide as a counselor.

What should someone do to prepare for starting PTSD/trauma therapy?

To prepare for your first PTSD/trauma therapy session, ask yourself how comfortable you feel discussing your trauma so we can set realistic goals for your treatment without causing additional distress by exploring trauma before you're ready to.

I appreciate the rapport between the two of us.

I appreciated being able to look through counselor profiles and pick one that I felt would be a good connection. I think, perhaps, one of the most important pieces in just knowing years of practice. I have been going to counseling for 5+ years (2 different counselors in that period) and this experience with Kristie in 3 sessions has really been better than any of those 5 years.

Jasmine truly listens and asks leading questions. If asked her opinion, she is not overly assertive with her opinion, but very enlightening. I have been dealing with a lot of vivid dreams and different memories from my past, and also dealing with neing rather short in my patience, and she offers why that may be happening. Jasmine is super supportive and a great listener. Truly the best therapist I have ever had.

Dawn listens without judgement and makes me feel heard and seen without feeling like I'm some kind of gross anomaly. She is supportive and knows how to talk to me in a way that I can use to better myself and reroute the negative thoughts into positive ones, or at least neutral. She is extremely patient and kind and I am so happy that I've found her.
