I find that a person-centered approach works well in treating depression, whether on its own or alongside other treatment approaches (i.e. CBT, narrative, etc.). Person-centered therapy provides empathy, unconditional positive regard, and empowerment to individuals with depression to help them facilitate change within themselves.
I encourage my clients with depression to explore their values, goals, and beliefs to develop a clearer sense of identity. As they learn more about themselves, I encourage them to reflect and explore their interests to combat isolation and other feelings associated with depression. Having a greater sense of understanding and acceptance of themselves, these individuals will experience an increase in self-worth and motivation to engage in meaningful experiences.
Clinical progress in treatment for individuals diagnosed with depression includes but is not limited to increased motivation to engage in preferred activities and/or socialization, higher levels of energy, improved quality of sleep and/or appetite, a decrease in negative self-talk, a more positive outlook, mood stability, and improvement in their overall quality of life and relationships.
Clients with depression are encouraged to reconnect with their preferred interests or hobbies and engage in social connections.
I tell my clients this all the time — one of the hardest parts about depression is not having the motivation to do anything, let alone engage in activities/interventions for self-improvement. So, scheduling a session with a therapist and coming to therapy is a big achievement in itself. When you come to your first counseling session, just come as you are.

If you’re experiencing any of the above symptoms and think it might be related to the development of depression, consider working with one of our depression counselors, psychologists, or therapists.

There are many different kinds of depression: there’s major depression, minor depression, postpartum depression, seasonal affective disorder, and many others. But the most common form is major depression. Symptoms of major depression include:
Are you presenting any of these symptoms? Are you generally uninterested in day-to-day activities and failing to function well in important areas of life? If the answer is yes, meet with a mental health professional who is familiar with depression and treatment for the illness. A Chesterfield depression counselor at Thriveworks Midlothian fits the bill and can help.
No two experiences in counseling are identical. Why? Because your counselor will base your sessions around your specific presentation of depression as well as your goals for treatment. They will ask you a few simple questions, like what symptoms you are experiencing and what you hope to accomplish to customize the most effective plan. That said, depression counseling often involves discussing your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, which are likely contributing to your depression. Your counselor will help you to change these habits and, in turn, change the very course of your life.
Additionally, you can expect your depression counselor to talk to you about care outside of the therapy room—as the work doesn’t stop when your weekly session is over. You must engage in self-care, to stay on top of your mental and emotional health.
This is all about taking the time to participate in activities that you enjoy and that benefit you. Examples include:
If you aren’t interested in any of the self-care activities listed above, that’s okay. The key here is to find activities that you are interested in, that also benefit you in multiple capacities. If you aren’t sure what self-care activities might best benefit you, your counselor can help you explore and discover.
