Online therapy FAQs

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

Life is completely beautiful and wonderful and I wouldn’t change a thing. Do you agree with this statement? It probably depends on your current circumstances. If you just got a promotion, you’re at a great place with your partner, or have other personal victories to celebrate, you probably do agree with this sentence. If, on the other hand, you just got fired, you’re in a fight with your spouse, or you’re struggling with other personal problems, you probably couldn’t disagree more!

Here is the test to find whether your mission

on Earth is finished: if you’re alive, it isn’t.”

–Richard Bach

We all experience highs and lows. Can you agree with this statement? Hopefully, the answer is unequivocally yes. When we encounter the highs it’s easy to feel grateful for the life we’re living, and when we encounter the lows it’s easy to feel pessimistic about life instead. In fact, it’s okay to feel pessimistic about or angry at life, so long as you take proactive steps to climb yourself out of the depths.

Often, we could use a hand to successfully climb out and bury the hole we fell into. This hand might belong to a loved one… but sometimes we need a little extra strength, of which we can find in a mental health professional. If you’re looking for Fairfax counseling, but you’re struggling to book an appointment that works with your schedule, consider working with one of our online counselors at Thriveworks McLean. Fairfax Counseling: Who Can Benefit from Online Counseling?

Here at Thriveworks McLean, we believe that anyone and everyone can benefit from working with a skilled, caring counselor, therapist, or coach. This can be in-person or online! That said, there are some people who might find online counseling particularly beneficial, such as those looking for more flexible scheduling options as well as greater anonymity in therapy. Consider the following examples:

  1. Jen and Troy can’t seem to find a therapist who has availability that fits their needs. They both work 9-5 jobs and can’t possibly leave for 60+ minutes to attend a couples therapy appointment. Fortunately, they find online counseling services, which allow them to attend their session after work hours and from the comfort of home.
  2. Allison knows that she could benefit from working with a counselor, but she wants to keep her decision private and worries that someone she knows will see her walking into the therapy office. Fortunately, she discovers an online therapy opportunity and jumps at the chance to work with a counselor online. Allison doesn’t have to worry about revealing her decision to attend therapy to people in her community.
  3. John is sick of having to cancel and reschedule his therapy appointments. It seems like there’s always something that makes him late or causes him to miss his session, including unpredictable weather and road conditions. The good news is that John finds an online therapy service, makes the switch, and couldn’t be happier with his decision. He’s able to make meaningful progress with his counselor each week, over the phone and via videoconferences.

Do you find yourself in a similar predicament? Are you struggling to find a therapist who has scheduling options that fit your schedule? Are you looking for a counseling option that offers greater anonymity? Are you longing for greater reliability in counseling? Online counseling might be a great option for you.
