My approach for therapy is to first establish a good rapport with the clients. I welcome questions along the way and, especially in intake, let them know they can share what they are comfortable with and that I will respect their boundaries.
I work with the client while teaching tools such as breathing exercises, mindfulness, grounding techniques, journaling exercises, and worksheets.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in therapy when they gain more insight into their issues and start catching themselves in old thinking and problem-solving patterns. Also, when clients are able to utilize what they have learned in therapy and apply it to situations that had previously been triggering anxious/overwhelming thoughts and emotions. Getting better quality sleep, fewer sleep disturbances, fewer episodes of anger or panic attacks, etc., are also signs of meaningful improvement in their lives.
Clients can do many things in their personal time to supplement therapy. They can supplement their time between sessions by working on some of the exercises and techniques reviewed with them in sessions. Journaling is good as well—reflecting on issues that are being worked on in therapy, gratitude journals, daily journaling, art, and journaling about a specific interest or activity (e.g., travel, cooking, hiking) can all be beneficial. Other activities like taking a walk out in nature or hanging out with others are also good.
To prepare for your first therapy session, you can write down a list of questions and concerns to discuss. This can include current stressors in your life, past issues/events that have occurred that you may want to address, and current symptoms and how long you have been experiencing them. You will want to think about what you want to work on while in therapy, as well as what goals you want to strive for.
At Thriveworks, Trauma/PTSD therapy involves dedicated efforts to address and navigate through past and/or recent traumatic events. Therapists specializing in trauma create a secure environment to process and heal from these experiences, aiming to reduce trauma-related symptoms and enhance overall quality of life.

If a client is working through a single traumatic event that occurred as an adult, trauma or PTSD therapy may only take a few months, but in general, it can take a year or more to effectively treat trauma symptoms and PTSD. The duration of treatment is highly dependent on the client and the severity of their symptoms.
The success rate of therapy for PTSD depends entirely on the individual’s symptoms, commitment to attending sessions, and personal abilities.
