What is your go-to approach for family therapy?

My approach for therapy is to first establish a good rapport with the clients. I welcome questions along the way, and, especially in intake, let them know they can share what they are comfortable with and that I will respect their boundaries.

What tools do you teach in family therapy?

Families learn through various techniques how to better express themselves verbally and nonverbally, apply active listening, and identify and establish healthy boundaries. Utilizing different exercises such as narrative stories, mirroring, role play, and play therapy helps family members come to a greater understanding of themselves and each other while building a stronger, renewed sense of connection and family identity.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in family therapy?

Families begin making meaningful progress in therapy when they gain more insight into their issues and start catching themselves in old thinking and problem-solving patterns. Also, when they start connecting with each other again in various activities, conflicts are reduced, and appropriate, effective communication increases among each other.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement family therapy?

Families can do many things in their personal time to supplement therapy. They can supplement their time between sessions by working on some of the exercises and techniques reviewed with them in sessions. Family therapy activities include worksheets and writing assignments, role-playing, family genograms, art therapy, playing games, and doing other fun activities together.

What should someone do to prepare for starting family therapy?

To prepare for your first therapy session, each family member can write down a list of questions and concerns to discuss. This can include current stressors in your family's life, past issues/events that have occurred that you may want to address, as well as current symptoms and how long you have been experiencing them. Of course, you will want to think about what you want to work on while in therapy, as well as what goals you want to strive for in your family.

Family therapy FAQs

What is family therapy?

Family therapy helps families resolve conflicts and strengthen their relationships. It is led by qualified mental health professionals like psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) who have extensive training in family dynamics and group communication.

How does family therapy work?

Thriveworks family therapists in Kingwood, TX usually begin by asking what everyone’s goals are for family counseling. Family members may need help with very specific issues or with general relationship functioning. But there are three main purposes in family counseling: to educate, to counsel, and to strengthen. Thriveworks also offers online family therapy and in-person services, so you may all meet in an office together or join a video call from your home depending on everyone’s location and availability.

What is the most effective family therapy?

The most effective form of Family therapy will often depend on the family itself, as there are many types of family therapy for therapists to use as they see fit in order to best meet the needs of their clients. However, one of the most commonly used types of family therapy is structural family therapy (SFT). SFT focuses specifically on family dynamics and interactions, looking at how they shape the relationships and structure present in the family. It can be effectively used to treat a variety of concerns.

How do I know if my family needs therapy?

This answer often looks different to each family that starts family therapy. However, some signs that your family might need to consider family counseling include frequent fights or misunderstandings, constant tension, experiencing loss, behavioral issues, marital issues, divorce, and blended family issues, among others.

What is included in family therapy?

In family therapy, therapists will often start by asking questions and assessing individual and family dynamics. From there, they may employ therapeutic techniques such as structured family therapy, CBT, strategic family therapy, and more depending on the present concerns and conflicts. From there, a therapist will work to open lines of communication between family members and facilitate emotional healing and growth.

What is the success rate of family therapy?

Family therapy can be incredibly successful, with some studies reporting a success rate of almost 90% for improving participants’ emotional and mental health, and around 66% for improving their physical health.

Is family therapy conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks therapists in Kingwood, TX offer both online family therapy and in-person family therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does family therapy last?

Family therapy is usually short term and solution-focused, with most families accomplishing their goals in 12 sessions or fewer. However, it can also last for longer if the probles at hand are more complex — and that’s okay, too.

Need more help deciding?

The premium family therapists at Thriveworks in Kingwood, TX can facilitate these complex discussions between family members and help people determine what a healthy family looks like to them. Family therapy takes place in a safe, secure atmosphere where everyone is encouraged to speak their mind respectfully and openly. Each point of view matters. A family therapist helps family members zero in on the exact issue, then helps them find practical solutions. Reach out today to get started.

Who Can Family Therapy Help?

Family counseling can help family members achieve their individual and collective goals, whatever they may be. Licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) at Thriveworks are experienced in treating all kinds of issues that crop up in families, including the following:

  • Postpartum depression
  • Anxiety
  • Grief
  • Financial stress
  • Marital stress
  • Juvenile delinquency or crime
  • Conflict
  • Tension
  • Estrangements
  • Emotional or verbal abuse
  • Chronic illness
  • Caregiver burnout
  • Anorexia or bulimia
  • Behavioral problems
  • Substance abuse
  • Codependency
  • Perfectionism
  • Unhealthy parenting styles

Though a family therapist’s job isn’t to assign blame, sometimes they may identify one family member who could benefit from additional psychological support. In that event, they may refer the person for individual counseling.

What Is a Typical Treatment Plan for Family Therapy?

A typical treatment plan for family therapy might include a hybrid of therapeutic approaches, such as strategic therapy, narrative therapy, structural therapy, or systemic therapy. Family therapy sessions might also incorporate mindfulness techniques that can improve everyone’s overall mental health. Family therapy can also assign specific exercises that may help enhance communication and honesty between family members.

Above all, family therapists at Thriveworks in Kingwood, TX develop treatment plans that aim to achieve the family’s own goals. This means they may focus on any of the following issues:

  • Reconciliation and healing
  • Better rapport
  • Reduction in conflict and tension
  • Forgiving, or asking for forgiveness
  • Establishing boundaries
  • Managing anger
  • Building trust in each other
  • Exploring misunderstandings
  • Finding individual support

I felt heard and received an explanation for all of my thoughts and feelings. It was very appreciated. I also liked the background. It made me feel more comfortable and at home. It didn't feel scary or too serious. I like a relaxed and fun environment, and that is what Miguel's setting was set up to be.
