What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

My approach for individual therapy is to first establish a good rapport with the clients. I welcome questions along the way and, especially in intake, let clients know they can share what they are comfortable with and respect their boundaries.

What tools do you teach in anxiety therapy?

I work with clients while teaching breathing exercises, mindfulness, grounding techniques, guided imagery, journaling exercises, and worksheets.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy?

I know clients are making meaningful progress in therapy when they are gaining more insight into their issues and start catching themselves in old thinking and problem-solving patterns. Also, when clients are able to utilize what they have learned in therapy and apply it to situations that had previously been triggering anxious and overwhelming thoughts and emotions. Another sign is when they discuss obtaining better-quality sleep, appetite, and intake.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement anxiety therapy?

Clients can do many things in their personal time to supplement therapy. They can supplement their time between sessions by working on some of the exercises and techniques reviewed with them in sessions. Journaling is good as well; reflecting on issues that are being worked on in therapy, gratitude journals, daily journaling, art, and journaling about a specific interest or activity—travel, cooking, hiking—can all be beneficial. Other activities like taking a walk in nature or hanging out with friends are also good. Practicing self-compassion, letting yourself “just be,” and getting plenty of rest are also helpful.

What should someone do to prepare for starting anxiety therapy?

To prepare for your first therapy session, you can write down a list of questions and concerns to discuss. This can include current stressors in your life, past issues/events that have occurred that you may want to address, and current symptoms and how long you have been experiencing them. This is prior to being seen so this is strictly based on first impressions upon entering the building. The waiting area is nice but undefined as to where one should go nor any indications as to what is needed to be done. No one was there to greet us nor was there any desk or window to suggest someone would. We looked for the therapist's office but no doors had any identification to point us in the right direction. At this point we're at the mercy of the clock alerting the therapist to seek us out in the waiting area in order to be seen. Not the best first impression. I will update this review if and when we are seen.
