My approach to grief/loss counseling is use of re-membering narrative therapy. Thinking of individuals as members of our 'club of life' can be helpful to explore to reincorporate an individual's 'membership' into our lives after death. Our lives are impacted by the people in them and this impact can continue after death. By using these approaches it can be possible to find ways in which clients can continue connection to loved ones they've lost through significant rituals or legacy.
The tools used for re-membering narrative therapy are more conversationally based but clients can take helpful questions out of session with them to reflect on at home or with other important members of their life.
When a client can identify and pursue practices that honor the individual they are grieving, it is likely an indication of progress in therapy. Similarly, when a client can use a re-membered individual to create and pursue their preferred narrative they may also be experiencing progress in therapy.
Homework outside of therapy may be assigned to complete before your next session that can contribute to continued work with your therapist.
Finding a clinician that you feel meets the needs you may have for therapy is recommended. Therapeutic fit and establishing rapport can be helpful in meeting therapeutic goals quickly. Contacting the therapist's office or requesting a quick consultation to discuss your goals for treatment may be a helpful step to take prior to your first session.

If you have recently experienced an event like the death of a loved one, a breakup or divorce, the loss of a job, or another major life change, then you may want to seek grief and loss counseling. Grief can be caused by many experiences and events, so if you feel that you are having trouble moving on from a certain event or find that it is still impacting your life and functioning, grief and loss counseling can help you process it more effectively so that you can move on and once again find fulfillment and satisfaction in your life.
There are many counseling theories for treating grief, one of the most frequently used being the dual process model of grief which helps people acknowledge who or what they’ve lost through rumination while also adjusting to the new roles and identities that this loss has now placed on them. There are also many commonly used therapy approaches used in grief and loss counseling, including Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and traumatic grief therapy.
Grief & loss counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
