My go-to approach for treating depression is cognitive therapy. I find this beneficial for clients because many of them who come to counseling have experienced either ridicule from others or never had someone to believe in them, and often are self-critical in their thinking. As a result, they may have developed distorted thinking patterns (what we call "cognitive distortions") based on others' influences, perhaps that of their parents or a significant other, with the client being in a home where healthy self-talk is prevented.
"I use the following tools in depression counseling:
I know a client is making progress in depression counseling when it is obvious that they are responding verbally in sessions; they are persistent in changing their faulty cognitions, hopefully journaling their thoughts; and they come to sessions with responses that show how their feelings have changed for the better and they are more hopeful about themselves and their future. I tell clients that they have to put time in (and it doesn't mean focusing every minute on it) to benefit from cognitive therapy. Cognitive therapy, which I utilize myself, is a lifetime process of good self-care for the body and soul.
Client can supplement their time in depression counseling with good self-care and regular morning rituals, and mindfulness-based activities are always a plus.
To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can first be honest and brief: Tell me whether or not you currently believe in yourself. There is a phrase by Friedrich Nietzsche that says, "He who has a 'why' to live can bear with almost any 'how.'"

Depression is one of the most common diagnosable mental disorders, affecting upwards of 300 million people globally, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). But despite how common these issues are, people who suffer from depression don’t always feel comfortable reaching out for help.
Some people feel a great deal of shame when it comes to mental health issues like anxiety and depression. It’s common for those affected by mental illness to feel as if it is some kind of personal failure, though this is far from the case.
To make matters more complicated, depression can feel highly isolating. This can make it difficult to bring up, even with those who are closest to you. It may seem easier to simply tell those around you that you’re doing fine.
The good news, however, is that depression is a highly treatable condition. Professional counseling services are available and have helped countless others overcome their feelings of depression. If you’ve been struggling with depression, consider reaching out to the mental health experts at Thriveworks in Huntsville, AL. It’s the first step on a path toward greater healing.
It’s completely normal to feel down from time to time. For example, many people experience sadness after the loss of a loved one, difficulties in a relationship, or financial troubles. However, if symptoms of depression are persistent over several weeks and are interfering in your daily life, it may be time to consider speaking to a mental health professional.
When it comes to feelings of depression, each individual’s symptoms may be different. Some people feel suicidal and can’t make it out of bed while others are able to function normally in their daily lives but can’t shake a persistent low mood. No matter what you are experiencing, know that your feelings are valid and that licensed counselors are available to help.
The reasons and timeframe for depression can also vary from person to person. Sometimes depression is brought on by a clear triggering event while other times it may slowly happen without a particularly discernible reason. Some people experience depression in episodes while others experience consistent sad feelings over a long period.
Although there are many different types of depression, some of the most common symptoms include:
If you’ve been experiencing these or any other symptoms of depression, consider speaking to a professional counselor. Trained mental health professionals are standing by at Thriveworks Counseling in Huntsville, AL.
Have you lost interest in activities you used to enjoy? Do you feel lost and directionless? Are negative thoughts interfering with your ability to concentrate?
Depression can be overwhelming and it’s easy to feel like there’s no way out. However, professional counselors have devoted their lives to providing effective treatment for depression and other issues related to your mental and emotional health.
Depression can be caused by a combination of biological, mental, and social factors. This means a multifaceted approach may be necessary, often involving talk therapy, medication, or both. It will be up to your therapist to make a determination as to the best treatment plan after a comprehensive evaluation.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a highly effective type of talk therapy used to treat many forms of depression. The goal is to help you identify negative thought patterns that may be contributing to feelings of low self-worth and low moods. Professional counselors are experienced in helping clients identify these thought patterns and make adjustments in their daily life.
