Starting Anxiety therapy

What is anxiety therapy?

Anxiety therapy helps people better understand and manage their anxiety. Anxiety therapists at Thriveworks in Grand Prairie, TX can develop a treatment plan that will help you better manage your day-to-day anxiety or your anxiety disorder.

How does anxiety therapy work?

Anxiety therapy involves talking to a therapist about symptoms, potential causes, and more. Thriveworks Grand Prairie therapists will then work with you to determine where your anxiety might stem from and teach you effective coping mechanisms.

How to deal with anxiety?

One of the best ways to deal with anxiety is to learn about your own anxiety: your symptoms, what triggers it, and what coping mechanisms have been effective in the past. When you learn what your anxiety is tied to, it can help you be mindful of what’s really happening as well as prevent and mitigate symptoms by processing and working through the issue in therapy. Other strategies that have been shown to help manage anxiety are meditation, challenging anxious thoughts, exercising, and journaling.

Symptoms of anxiety

Common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Sense of impending danger
  • Nervousness/restlessness
  • Trouble focusing
  • Excessive sweating
  • Shaking
  • Headaches
  • Stomach issues
  • Fatigue
  • Panic attacks
  • Increased heart rate

What is the best therapy for anxiety?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be incredibly effective in treating anxiety and anxiety disorders. Other effective techniques include exposure therapy, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and EMDR therapy.

Is anxiety therapy conducted in person or online?

Anxiety therapy is conducted both in person and online, depending on the individual’s preferences and their therapist’s availability. We suggest choosing the option that best suits your needs.

How long does anxiety therapy last?

On average, people can tend to attend 15 to 20 session of anxiety therapy (five or more months). However, this number is heavily dependent on the type of anxiety that’s being treated and its severity, with many choosing to attend anxiety therapy for a longer period of time to ensure its effectiveness long-term.

Is therapy worth it for anxiety?

Yes, it is worth going to therapy for anxiety. If you are struggling with regular anxious thoughts and feelings that are affecting your day-to-day life or you suspect that you have an anxiety disorder, you should seek expert anxiety help.

  • Nervousness and tension
  • A sense of impending doom
  • A rapid heart rate or difficulty breathing
  • Weakness and exhaustion
  • Muscle and body aches
  • Difficulty falling and staying asleep
  • Trouble focusing
  • Problems controlling worries
  • Avoidance of anxiety-causing situations

When you’re dealing with anxiety, it can feel like you’ll never be able to calm yourself down. Our licensed therapists and counselors in Grand Prairie, TX, can help you with treating your anxiety symptoms.

The Benefits of Therapy for People With Anxiety

Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, is a form of psychological treatment where you and a licensed professional meet to talk deeply about your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This practice helps people with anxiety learn how to identify and work through the thoughts that cause emotional distress and influence their behavior. Anxiety counseling is often done through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), though other types of therapy like exposure therapy or psychodynamic therapy are also helpful.

Sessions can look different for everyone depending on their unique needs. A client with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), for example, may have different treatment options than a client with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, there are some general practices taught in therapy, such as:

  • Radical acceptance: This skill is about accepting life and your situation as it is, even if you don’t like how things are going.
  • Grounding exercises: This can include mindfulness activities such as meditation, yoga, or exercise that help ground you in your present moment.
  • Distress tolerance: This includes practices like paced breathing and exercise to help quickly bring you down from a state of extreme emotional distress.

These coping skills can help you reduce anxiety and live your best life. Working with a mental health professional from Thriveworks Counseling in Grand Prairie, TX, can help you learn these types of skills and reduce your anxiety.

I have been working with Dr. Covey for almost 6 months now and she has been excellent. I feel like I am heard and understood even when I have a hard time expressing things myself and putting thoughts into words. Having someone who can actually listen and provide the resources to assist myself with past trauma and current challenges has been a life changer.

This is prior to being seen so this is strictly based on first impressions upon entering the building. The waiting area is nice but undefined as to where one should go nor any indications as to what is needed to be done. No one was there to greet us nor was there any desk or window to suggest someone would. We looked for the therapist's office but no doors had any identification to point us in the right direction. At this point we're at the mercy of the clock alerting the therapist to seek us out in the waiting area in order to be seen. Not the best first impression. I will update this review if and when we are seen.
