My go-to approach for helping a teen in therapy is finding the child's interest. I find the benefit to be twofold: It addresses the child's needs at their developmental and interest levels while also making therapy enjoyable and fun.
In therapy, I assist the teenager by:
Therapy is a team effort. Together, we will address the prior issues of concern to monitor and review the progress made over the past few weeks. We will decide if the goals were sufficiently met to terminate therapy. I know a teen has made meaningful progress when there is growth in their self-esteem and they are better able to get their needs met in an assertive and non-aggressive manner. I know a teen has made meaningful progress when they are better able to function at home and at school.
Clients can supplement their time in teen counseling by recognizing the validity of their feelings. Teenagers sometimes enjoy journaling or reading books that encourage their growth.
To prepare for their first teen counseling session, sometimes a teen finds it helpful to write down their thoughts and feelings beforehand.
