Hi, I’m Madison Powell, Resident in Counseling, MSEd. I work with adults who are navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, stress, and major life transitions. Many of the clients I support feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck in patterns that no longer serve them. Whether you're looking to heal from past experiences, build healthier coping skills, strengthen your relationships, or feel more confident in managing life's challenges, I aim to provide a supportive space where you can feel heard, understood, and respected.
My approach is collaborative, trauma-informed, and tailored to your unique needs. Drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, person-centered, and narrative approaches, I help clients identify patterns, reframe unhelpful beliefs, build resilience, and develop practical tools for lasting change and personal growth.
Seeking support takes courage, and you don't have to navigate life's challenges alone. My goal is to create a safe, compassionate environment where you feel empowered to grow, heal, and move forward with confidence. If you're ready to invest in yourself and your well-being, I would be honored to be part of your journey.

As a therapist, I will do all that I can to learn who you are and what you're looking for, and then help create truly meaningful change.
As your therapist, I will not be another voice telling you to push through and make things work when they just won't. I will show up as a kind, calm person who's ready to meet you where you are without judgement. I’ll take the time to get to know you, learn what matters to you, and work with you to create the change you're looking for. I specialize in working with people with ADHD and autism, as well as anyone looking for a space where they can feel genuinely heard. If you're feeling overwhelmed and unsure about where to even begin, that's okay. We can figure it out together!
In our sessions, you’ll have space to talk openly about whatever is on your mind. I can offer structure, feedback, and practical guidance when that’s helpful, while also giving you room to slow down, sort through your thoughts and emotions, and make sense of what you’re experiencing.
You deserve a life that is authentic and feels like your own. We can talk, get to know each other a little, and see if working together feels like a good fit. I'm available to work virtually with anyone in VA.

My approach is built on the belief that real change grows from honesty, not perfection; I'm here to walk beside you through the hard parts.
I'm April Gardner, a Mental Health Resident with seven years of experience supporting individuals and couples. I work with clients navigating anxiety, depression, family challenges, and communication barriers between partners, including ADHD-related dynamics. I offer a faith-based Christian counseling perspective for those who want faith woven into their healing, and I run groups for ADHD and Search for Significance, a faith-centered approach to self-worth. I'm here to walk beside you through the hard parts.
My approach blends psychoeducation with faith-based support and hands-on practice between sessions. Homework isn't boring worksheets. It's creative experiments and novel experiences that fit how your brain works. Whether we're tackling ADHD, couple communication, or self-worth, you'll get clear tools, real goals, and progress you can see.
Whatever brought you here, you don't have to carry it alone anymore. Taking the first step is often the hardest part, and showing up for yourself is already courage. When you're ready, I'd be honored to walk beside you. You deserve support that meets you where you are.
You deserve dedicated time with a mental health professional — it can be life-changing.

At Thriveworks, Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a widely recognized and evidence-based form of psychotherapy or talk therapy. It focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns, emotions, and behaviors that can contribute to various mental health issues or challenges that people are struggling with.
Cognitive behavioral therapists specialize in Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and can help you to identify and comprehend your thought patterns, which often encompass automatic negative thoughts, cognitive distortions, and self-defeating beliefs. Once these negative thought patterns are pinpointed, cognitive behavioral therapists aim to challenge and replace them with the objective of fostering more constructive and logical thinking. In addition, these therapists place significant emphasis on implementing positive behavioral changes based on the newly established, healthier thought patterns.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is particularly effective for addressing conditions like anxiety disorders, depression, phobias, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. It focuses on identifying and modifying negative thought patterns and behaviors, making it well-suited for issues related to distorted thinking and emotional regulation.
At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.
The success rate of CBT varies depending on the intentions of the client and their condition(s).
The selection between cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is based on an individual’s unique needs and challenges. CBT is commonly chosen for addressing conditions such as anxiety and depression, whereas DBT is especially beneficial for individuals dealing with borderline personality disorder, emotional regulation issues, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with our Thriveworks therapists in Ashburn, VA is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
Generally, CBT is considered a short-term therapy, typically lasting for about 12 to 20 weekly sessions. In some cases, it might extend to around 16 to 20 sessions for more complex issues.
