As we mentioned above, one challenge is recognizing that one has an addiction problem. Conquering this challenge is incredibly important, as it is the first step in getting the help that you need to recover. While the symptoms or warning signs of addiction can vary, depending on the person and the substance or behavior they are addicted to, there are a few common behavioral signs of addiction including:
Additionally, there are some physical symptoms of addiction that are common among these individuals, including:
It is also common for those with an addiction to experience trembling, nausea, a loss of appetite, depressive thoughts and feelings (especially when they go for an extended period of time without using the desired substance/thing).
Getting past some of these symptoms is tough and it’s a reason why many addicts go through their lives miserable and untreated. Oftentimes an addict only seeks treatment after an intervention by those who love them. They never knew that they were an addict—or more likely they knew but just didn’t want to admit it. Admitting it and seeking early treatment are vital to recovery. If these symptoms and warning signs of addiction are present in your life, consider working with an addiction counselor at Thriveworks Arlington. We are here to help you manage your addiction before it gets worse.
