What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go-to approach for treating depression is talk therapy and focusing on self-care. I prefer/enjoy/find the best benefit in assessing and processing any traumas while focusing on oneself because attacking depression from both areas can help growth and progress.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

I teach the following tools in depression counseling: self-care tools consisting of meditation, reflection activities, grounding activities, as well as, cognitive refocusing, reframing and challenging.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in therapy when they are achieving their goals that we collectively agreed upon. This is demonstrated by their actions, demeanor, attitude, and personal assessments.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in therapy with external practices such as journaling, joining group activities, attending helpful seminars, social activities, and/or listening to positive podcasts.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can write down your main concerns and what you have done in the past to try to alleviate them. Also have a written list of medications you are taking and for what ailments.

Starting Depression counseling in Amarillo

What can counseling do for those who suffer with depression?

Depression counseling can help those with major depression, minor depression, postpartum depression, persistent depressive disorder, and more. The providers at Thriveworks in Amarillo, TX will develop a unique treatment plan based on your specific experience, needs, and goals.

Is it worth going to therapy for depression?

It is absolutely worth going to therapy for depression — depression counseling helps people better manage their symptoms and get back to living happier lives again.

How does depression counseling work?

Depression counseling works by helping people pinpoint life problems, distorted thought patterns, and other causes of their depression, then process and work through them in order to mitigate the negative effects those factors have on their lives.

Signs of depression

Common signs of depression include:

  • Consistent low mood
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Oversleeping or difficulty sleeping
  • Changes in diet (eating much more or less)
  • Withdrawal and isolation
  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Loss of interest in previous hobbies or activities
  • Excessive substance use

Is depression counseling conducted in person or online?

  • Hypersomnia or insomnia
  • Changes in appetite or eating habits
  • Difficulty focusing or making decisions
  • Feelings of loneliness, sadness, or emptiness
  • Feelings of anxiousness or anger
  • Thoughts of suicide or self-harm
  • Sudden shifts in mood

  • Physical symptoms such as headaches or dizziness

Some of the most common depressive disorders include:

  • Postpartum depression (PPD), where severe depression occurs in the weeks or months following childbirth.
  • Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which can cause seasonal depression and bouts of weight gain, sadness, and exhaustion during the winter months.
  • Persistent depressive disorder (PDD), a depressive disorder lasting for at least two years.
  • Bipolar depression, which includes intense mood swings from elevated highs to extreme lows.

What Can Depression Therapy Do for Me?

Depression does not have to consume you. Your provider will gauge the intensity of your symptoms and the nuances of your situation to create the appropriate treatment plan to provide relief.

Treatment may require a multifaceted approach. For example, your counselor or therapist may recommend treatments such as psychotherapy or cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help manage your depression.

Treatment may also consist of counseling for past traumas or substance abuse, medication for genetic or hormonal imbalances, or a combination of counseling and medication to treat multiple challenges.

No matter the treatment plan, you can expect individualized, long-term care that focuses on your symptoms and needs. To begin your wellness plan, please reach out to set up an appointment with us at Thriveworks in Amarillo, TX.
