What is your go-to approach for cognitive behavioral therapy?

My go-to approach for helping clients in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is to intently gather comprehensive data about one’s personal thoughts & experiences to ultimately reveal the individual’s worldview and core beliefs about one’s self. I find the best benefit in training clients to utilize the technique of “metacognition” because it facilitates insight and self-awareness, which ultimately unleashes the power to shift & change behavior long-term.

What tools do you teach in cognitive behavioral therapy?

I teach the techniques of metacognition, cognitive reframing, and diaphragmatic breathing. These are core skills that result in shifting maladaptive thinking and promote relaxation, which ultimately results in significant behavioral change.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in cognitive behavioral therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) when the client’s target behavior changes. These positive shifts in behavior oftentimes result in both cognitive and behavioral modifications that ultimately result in significant progress toward specific treatment goals.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement cognitive behavioral therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) by consistently practicing the core skills learned during the therapeutic process on a daily basis. This will reinforce what the clinician and client are doing within the psychotherapy session and substantially increase the probability of change and a positive outcome.

What should someone do to prepare for starting cognitive behavioral therapy?

To prepare for their first cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) session, an individual should simply go to their initial visit thinking about the specific issue that they would like to address. This will streamline the treatment process and enable the clinician and client to establish treatment goals in a very efficient manner.
