About
As a child, I always wondered why certain things always seemed to happen to me. As an adult, I learned how to use these experiences to be a better person. As a therapist, I learned that these experiences taught me to be empathetic and help others who are dealing with similar circumstances.
My name is Karlene Chisholm. I am a licensed marriage and family therapist in the state of Connecticut. I have had the honor and privilege of working with individuals, families, and couples—both young and old—for the past 27 years. I have experience working with children and teens (ages 6–19), young adults, couples, and older adults. I have worked with a range of concerns, including ADHD, ODD, grief and loss, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and marital issues.
When working with clients, the first step toward successful treatment is creating a safe environment where they can fully engage in the therapeutic process. Once that engagement is established, we can work together to develop treatment goals, encourage behavioral change, and implement appropriate therapeutic approaches.
As a therapist, I believe that my clients already possess the tools they need within themselves to heal and grow. My job is to help facilitate that change and support them throughout the process.

I strongly believe in a person’s ability to be able to overcome difficult situations that may arise in their lives. That ability comes from self-motivation and guidance using a unified approach by problem solving, gaining insight, and implementing strategies to alleviate symptoms. My name is Courtney and I have 15 years of experience. I hold a Master's of Science degree in Mental Health Counseling from UAlbany. Prior to obtaining my Master's degree, I attended UCONN to double major in Psychology and Human Development and Family Studies. I am currently licensed as an LPC in the state of Connecticut. I have experience providing group, individual, and family therapy in the community, inpatient hospital, outpatient facility, group home, and residential settings. I have been able to serve diverse populations and have varied experience with people of differing ages, race, religion, sexual orientation, and diagnoses. I am passionate about working with individuals struggling with parenting and behavioral needs of their children, anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship concerns, and substance abuse. I typically use CBT, mindfulness, dialectical behavioral therapy, and solution focused techniques to assist in mitigating the struggles people are experiencing. Most importantly I use a collaborative approach as the client is the expert of their lives and my role is to help provide guidance and feedback rather than to dictate and force opinions. I look forward to meeting you and being a help to you in anyway that I can.

My approach for treating couples counseling is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I have used CBT for over 30 years and I have found it to be one of the most effective approaches in working with couples.
I teach the following skills in couple counseling:
I know when a couple is making progress when they are able to communicate with out blaming each other and they are focused on moving forward.
Couples can supplement their time in couples counseling by practicing the skill they have learned at home.
To prepare for couples counseling session, you can identify the issues you feel you need to work on in session.
Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:
Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.
Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.
On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.
Do you and your significant other struggle to connect on an intimate level lately? Are you constantly arguing about nonsense? Is there room to build a happier, more fulfilling relationship? If so, you can find value in couples therapy.

Every couple can benefit from working with a couples therapist. Mimi Akhand, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist at our West Hartford office explains that “any couple looking for improving communication, connection, or tuning up their relationship, as well as confronting and getting through any crisis that has come up,” can find value in this service. Your Thriveworks Counseling couples therapist in West Hartford will get to know you, your partner, and your relationship.
Once they understand your unique needs and specific goals for working with a couples therapist, your provider will develop a plan for making the necessary improvements in your relationship.
The professionals at Thriveworks can provide you with tips and tools that will assist you in making these needed changes. For example, they might offer the following tips for building the very best relationship:
A common issue in relationships is communication. We fail to communicate our needs, our concerns, our desires. It’s important to open up these lines of communication and to talk our way through conflict. Remember: Honesty is always the best policy.
While it’s vital that you talk about your problems, that is not the total equation. It is also important that you come up with a clear plan for addressing those needs, concerns, or desires.
It’s easy to fall back into old habits. But when it comes to your relationship, you should prioritize putting in the work to stay on the right track. Once you learn to communicate and take necessary action, do your best to stick with this new pattern.
Remember that your relationship is not just your current challenges. Your relationship is so much more than that. Talk about what you love about your relationship and your significant other. This will bring you closer together and make working through your issues an easier process.
As you and your partner navigate the challenges that come your way, keep your expectations in check. You likely will not resolve all of your issues in one night. Instead, it will take time and work.
Don’t worry—you aren’t alone. Your Thriveworks couples therapist in Hartford, CT will help you and your partner on this journey. They have the skills, training, and experience to help you find success.
You and your partner must work together to make the necessary changes in your relationship. And you can find greater success working with a couples therapist, too! Couples therapy can help you to identify and open up about the issues in your relationship. Additionally, they can help you to identify the steps that you both need to take to find greater happiness together.
