What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My go-to approach for online therapy is a client-centered, solution-focused approach. I find the best benefit in this approach because it allows me to:

  • Empathize and understand the client's perspective: By actively listening to the client's concerns and validating their emotions, I create a safe and non-judgmental space for them to open up.
  • Identify goals and solutions: Together with the client, I help them identify specific goals and solutions that are tailored to their unique situation and needs.
  • Focus on progress and growth: By setting realistic goals and celebrating small victories, we can work together to build momentum and foster a sense of accomplishment.
In an online therapy setting, I would typically conduct an initial assessment to discuss the client's concerns, goals, and expectations, have regular check-ins to monitor progress, and work to collaboratively set goals, as well as provide emotional support, validation, resources, and referrals. By using this approach, I believe that clients can experience positive outcomes in online therapy, such as improved mental health, increased self-awareness, and enhanced coping skills.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I teach the following tools in online therapy:

  • Cognitive behavioral techniques: These techniques help clients identify and challenge negative thought patterns, replacing them with more balanced and realistic ones. This can include cognitive restructuring, thought-stopping, and reality-checking.
  • Mindfulness exercises: I would teach clients various mindfulness exercises to help them become more present-focused, reduce stress and anxiety, and improve emotional regulation. This can include guided meditations, deep breathing exercises, and body scan techniques.
  • Emotional labeling and expression: I would teach clients how to identify, label, and express their emotions in a healthy way. This can include journaling, expressive writing, or talking about emotions with a trusted friend or therapist.
  • Problem-solving skills: I would teach clients strategies for breaking down complex problems into manageable parts, identifying solutions, and implementing them. This can include brainstorming, prioritizing tasks, and creating action plans.
  • Self-care planning: I would teach clients the importance of self-care and help them develop personalized plans for taking care of their physical, emotional, and mental well-being. This can include scheduling self-care activities, setting boundaries, and prioritizing self-compassion.
  • Grounding techniques: I would teach clients grounding techniques to help them stay present and focused in the moment, especially during times of distress or anxiety. This can include using sensory exercises, such as focusing on the five senses, or engaging in physical activities like walking or stretching.
  • Progressive muscle relaxation: I would teach clients this technique to help them release physical tension and reduce stress. This involves systematically tensing and relaxing different muscle groups in the body.
  • Self-compassion statements: I would teach clients phrases to use when they are being kind to themselves, such as “I am doing the best I can,” “I am worthy of love and respect,” or “I am strong enough to handle this challenge.”
  • Boundary setting: I would teach clients how to set healthy boundaries with others to protect their emotional well-being. This can include setting limits on social interactions, saying “no” without guilt, and prioritizing self-care.
By teaching these tools in online therapy, I believe that clients can develop a range of skills to manage their mental health and improve their overall well-being.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when:

  • They report increased self-awareness and understanding of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This can be demonstrated through their ability to identify and articulate their emotions, thoughts, and triggers, as well as their willingness to explore and challenge negative patterns.
  • They exhibit increased self-compassion and self-care. This can be observed through their ability to practice self-care activities, prioritize their own needs, and engage in activities that promote relaxation and stress reduction.
  • They show improved coping skills and resilience. This can be demonstrated through their ability to effectively manage stress and anxiety, adapt to changing situations, and bounce back from setbacks.
  • They experience increased emotional regulation and stability. This can be observed through their ability to manage intense emotions, regulate their emotional responses, and maintain a sense of calm in the face of challenges.
  • They report improved relationships and social connections. This can be demonstrated through their ability to communicate effectively with others, set healthy boundaries, and maintain positive relationships.
  • They exhibit increased motivation and engagement. This can be observed through their willingness to take on new challenges, engage in activities that promote personal growth, and set goals for themselves.
  • They demonstrate a growth mindset and willingness to learn. This can be observed through their openness to new ideas, willingness to try new approaches, and recognition of the importance of lifelong learning.
  • They report decreased symptoms or improved overall well-being. This can be demonstrated through their reduced symptoms of anxiety, depression, or other mental health concerns, as well as their reported improvements in overall well-being.
  • They exhibit an increased sense of control and empowerment. This can be observed through their ability to take control of their life, make positive changes, and feel empowered to make decisions that align with their values and goals.
By considering these indicators, I believe that online therapy can be a highly effective way to support clients in achieving meaningful progress and improving their overall mental health.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in online therapy with:

  • Journaling and writing: Writing down thoughts, feelings, and insights can help clients process and reflect on their experiences, and can also serve as a useful tool for tracking progress and identifying patterns.
  • Mindfulness and meditation practices: Regular mindfulness and meditation practices can help clients develop greater self-awareness, reduce stress and anxiety, and improve emotional regulation.
  • Self-care activities: Engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation, such as exercise, reading, or spending time in nature, can help clients cultivate a sense of well-being and resilience.
  • Social connections and support networks: Building and maintaining social connections with friends, family, or support groups can provide clients with a sense of community and help them feel less isolated.
  • Personal growth and self-reflection exercises: Engaging in activities such as self-reflection, gratitude practices, or personal growth exercises can help clients develop greater self-awareness, self-acceptance, and self-compassion.
  • Creative expression: Engaging in creative activities such as art, music, or writing can provide clients with an additional outlet for expressing emotions and processing experiences.
  • Self-monitoring and tracking: Keeping track of progress, symptoms, or goals can help clients stay motivated, identify patterns, and make informed decisions about their treatment.
  • Reading and education: Reading books, articles, or online resources related to mental health, wellness, or personal growth can provide clients with additional information and tools to support their journey.
  • Exercise and physical activity: Regular exercise and physical activity can help clients reduce stress and anxiety, improve mood, and increase overall well-being.
  • Boundary setting and self-care planning: Developing a plan for setting boundaries and prioritizing self-care can help clients maintain a sense of balance and reduce stress in their daily lives.
By incorporating these activities into their daily routine, clients can supplement their online therapy sessions and enhance their overall progress and well-being.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can:

  • Schedule a convenient time and date: Set a specific time and date for your first session, ensuring that you have enough time to complete any necessary paperwork and that you're comfortable with the technology.
  • Choose a quiet and private space: Identify a quiet, private space where you can have uninterrupted access to your computer or device, and where you feel comfortable and secure.
  • Set up your technology: Ensure that your computer, tablet, or smartphone is in good working condition and that you have a stable internet connection. Familiarize yourself with the video conferencing software or platform that will be used for the sessions.
  • Download and test any necessary software: If you're using a specific platform or app for online therapy, download and test it before the session to ensure you're familiar with the interface and functionality.
  • Complete any necessary paperwork: Review and complete any necessary paperwork, such as consent forms, intake forms, or questionnaires, before the session. This will help you get started more quickly and ensure that your therapist has all the necessary information.
  • Prepare your environment: Clear your workspace of any distractions or interruptions, and make sure you're in a comfortable position with minimal noise or disruptions.
  • Take notes: Bring a notebook or pen to take notes during the session. This will help you stay focused and ensure that you remember important discussions or insights.
  • Write down your goals and concerns: Before the session, take some time to reflect on what you hope to achieve from therapy and what concerns you have. Writing down your goals and concerns can help you stay focused and ensure that you communicate them effectively to your therapist.
  • Be prepared to ask questions: Don't hesitate to ask questions during the session. This is an opportunity to clarify any concerns or uncertainties you may have, and it's essential for building a strong therapeutic relationship.
By taking these steps, you'll be well-prepared for your first online therapy session and can set yourself up for success.

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

5 Benefits of Online Therapy Counseling

Online counseling makes mental health services more realistic and more accessible. 5 benefits of online therapy include that:

  1. It makes counseling more convenient: First and foremost, online counseling is the most convenient therapy option for most people today. We’re all busy with work, with our kids’ schedules, with our spouses’ schedules, and the truth is that it’s hard to find the time for all of our appointments. Well, now you can attend your counseling appointment with ease from home.
  2. It allows you to be completely comfortable: On the same note, online counseling offers utmost comfort. You can attend your therapy sessions from wherever you please, even the nook of your couch or under covers in bed. We want you to feel completely comfortable.
  3. It’s easier to open up to a therapist online: This proves true for many of the clients that Thriveworks Richmond sees in counseling. In addition to being physically comfortable, we want you to feel comfortable opening up to your therapist mentally and emotionally. If you’ll feel more comfortable talking to them over the phone or video chat, online counseling might be right for you.
  4. It offers flexible scheduling options: Because online counseling allows both counselor and client to attend the session from wherever they need to, online counseling also comes with more flexible scheduling options! You’ll likely have access to evening and weekend sessions and you’ll also probably be able to schedule your first session for the same day that you call!

In addition to all of the above benefits, online counseling offers reliability, which you might not find in in-person counseling. This is due to the fact that you can’t control external factors like the weather, traffic, roadwork, and other externals that might affect your ability to make it to your session on time. Fortunately, with online counseling at Thriveworks Richmond (Shockoe Bottom), you don’t have to worry about these roadblocks.
