What is your go-to approach in sessions?

My go-to approach for helping people is simple; Listen. I prefer listening to my clients more and talking less. It is through listening that I can effectively assess a client's needs.

What is your typical approach to prescribing medications?

My approach to prescribing medication is to prescribe the most appropriate medication at the lowest possible dose.

Do you teach clients any therapeutic tools in sessions?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in our sessions when they start to demonstrate improved mood and behavior, show increased engagement in activities they once enjoyed, express a better understanding of their thoughts and feelings, utilize coping strategies learned during sessions in their daily life, and report improved relationships and interactions with others. It’s also a good sign when they show increased self-awareness, take steps towards their goals, and express feelings of hope and optimism about the future.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement psychiatric treatment?

There are several activities that psychiatric clients can engage in their personal time to supplement their psychiatric treatment. Here are some suggestions:

  • Exercise: Regular physical activity can help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.
  • Meditation: Mindfulness and meditation can help manage stress and improve mental well-being.
  • Journaling: Writing about thoughts and feelings can provide a therapeutic outlet.
  • Artistic activities: Engaging in creative activities like painting or music can be therapeutic.
  • Spending time in nature: Being outdoors can have a calming effect and improve mood.
  • Learning something new: Taking up a new hobby or learning a new skill can provide a sense of accomplishment.
  • Social activities: Spending time with loved ones or participating in group activities can provide social support.
  • Healthy eating: A balanced diet can have a positive impact on mood and energy levels.
  • Adequate sleep: Good sleep hygiene is crucial for mental health.
  • Relaxation techniques: Techniques such as deep breathing, yoga, and progressive muscle relaxation can help manage stress and anxiety.
  • Reading: Reading self-help books or materials related to mental health can provide additional insights.

What should someone do to prepare for starting psychiatric care?

The goal of the first psychiatry session is to start building a therapeutic relationship and to come up with a treatment plan. Preparing for the first psychiatry session can help make the process smoother and more beneficial. Here are some tips:

  • Understand the purpose: The first session is generally a get-to-know-you session where the clinician will ask questions about your symptoms, medical history, and life situation.
  • Prepare your medical history: Prepare a list of any medications you’re currently taking, any mental health treatments you’ve had, and any medical conditions you have. Also, prepare to discuss any psychiatric illnesses that run in your family.
  • Know your symptoms: Be ready to describe your symptoms, when they started, how severe they are, and how they affect your life.
  • Identify your goals: Think about what you hope to achieve with therapy. This could be anything from reducing your symptoms, to coping with a crisis, to making a major life change.
  • Plan for logistics: Make sure you have a good internet connection and are able to navigate the Zoom platform. Try to attend the session from your home in a private area with no distractions.
  • Be Oppen-minded: Understand that it’s okay to feel a range of emotions during your first visit. It’s normal to feel anxious about sharing personal information with someone new.

Starting Psychiatry/medication

Does Thriveworks offer psychiatric services?

Yes, we offer comprehensive psychiatric services to meet your mental health needs.

How does psychiatry work?

Psychiatry allows people struggling to manage mental conditions or disorders to get access to medications that will make daily functioning easier, as well as work through any mental factors that might be causing or worsening their condition. Though medications can’t cure mental disorders, medication can make symptoms more manageable, making the process of psychotherapeutic treatment easier and more effective. Psychiatric care can be available through in-person psychiatry and online psychiatry, depending on where you live and your own preferences. However, psychiatric providers at Thriveworks in Philadelphia, PA specifically offer online psychiatry to their clients.

What is the difference between a mental health therapist & psychiatrist?

A therapist has an education specifically rooted in therapeutic practice, approaches, techniques, and treatment. They cannot prescribe medications for clients, though they often refer clients to psychiatrists for medication management. Psychiatrists are medically trained doctors who specialize in mental health treatment, mainly through medication management and prescription, though they can also practice therapy.

What is a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (NP)?

A Psychiatry Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a highly trained and licensed professional who specializes in mental health care. They are qualified to diagnose and treat mental health conditions, prescribe medications, and provide therapy. Psychiatric NPs at Thriveworks are qualified to prescribe medications for a variety of mental health conditions. They work closely with you to develop a personalized treatment plan.

How do psychiatric providers diagnose?

Oftentimes, psychiatrists or psychiatric professionals will perform a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, which involves an in-depth discussion about your symptoms, medical history, and current medications. Once they reach a diagnosis, they may suggest starting certain medications depending on your condition and the intensity of your symptoms.

Can I receive psychiatric services online?

Yes. At Thriveworks, we offer online-only psychiatry services for optimal comfort and convenience.

How long does psychiatry last?

Psychiatric services at Thriveworks Philadelphia can last for as little or as much time as the client needs to reach their treatment goals, whether that be a month or two or over the course of a year. Treatment length is heavily dependent on the condition(s) being treated, the course of treatment, and the client’s goals for treatment.

Is anxiety treated with psychiatry?

Psychiatrists are mental health professionals who can prescribe anxiety medication and provide therapeutic treatment for anxiety, although not all psychiatrists offer therapy. At Thriveworks, medication management occurs via online psychiatry sessions.

Does Thriveworks accept insurance for psychiatric services?

Yes, Thriveworks accepts most major insurance plans. We strive to make mental health care accessible and affordable for everyone.
