As your provider, my priority is not focusing on just the "symptom" of the illness, it is to help you understand your mental health as a whole and the "illness" is something you experience and it does not define you.
Alison Graham is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who has worked with a spectrum of patients from adolescence to geriatrics. She has helped these individuals with depression and anxiety, all the way to psychosis and self-harm.
"Mental illness can be scary and isolating. I am not here to just focus on your symptoms. My purpose is to see you as a whole person," says Alison. "I offer honesty, hope, and humility during every visit. I want to have those tough conversations to then get to those 'I did it!' ones. While working with you, I am also your greatest advocate."
"Emotional pain is not something that should be hidden and never spoken about. There is truth in your pain, there is growth in your pain, but only if it's first brought out into the open," says Alison. "Let's work together to learn how to not sit in the pain forever but to sit in it for just enough time to grow from it."

My go-to approach for helping people in our medication check-ins is to have open dialogue. I find the best benefit in open dialogue because it allows individuals to express how they are feeling, and it helps develop a better understanding of what one is experiencing and the effectiveness of treatment.
My typical approach to prescribing medication is to collect psychiatric and medical history, assess current symptoms, identify past and/or evaluate current medication for effectiveness, for a better understanding of creating the best plan of care.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in our sessions when symptoms are reduced and/or aggravating factors do not aggravate or trigger negative symptoms anymore as they previously have in the past.
Clients typically benefit from utilizing coping skills and behavioral techniques outside of our sessions. Also, spending time with family and friends or doing things that make you happy are also good supplements to psychiatric treatment.
To prepare for your first psychiatry session, you can first start off by praising yourself in taking initiation to start your journey to improved mental health. Ultimately, you can come prepared to allow an open dialogue of your overall history and current symptoms.
Yes, we offer comprehensive psychiatric services to meet your mental health needs.
Psychiatry allows people struggling to manage mental conditions or disorders to get access to medications that will make daily functioning easier, as well as work through any mental factors that might be causing or worsening their condition. Though medications can’t cure mental disorders, medication can make symptoms more manageable, making the process of psychotherapeutic treatment easier and more effective. Psychiatric care can be available through in-person psychiatry and online psychiatry, depending on where you live and your own preferences. However, psychiatric providers at Thriveworks in Raleigh, NC specifically offer online psychiatry to their clients.
A therapist has an education specifically rooted in therapeutic practice, approaches, techniques, and treatment. They cannot prescribe medications for clients, though they often refer clients to psychiatrists for medication management. Psychiatrists are medically trained doctors who specialize in mental health treatment, mainly through medication management and prescription, though they can also practice therapy.

Oftentimes, psychiatrists or psychiatric professionals will perform a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, which involves an in-depth discussion about your symptoms, medical history, and current medications.
