What is your go-to approach for grief & loss counseling?

When dealing with grief, we wind up talking about the stages of grief. But every grief experience is different, and we find ourselves grieving things other than the death. People are often surprised by their guilt and anger during grief, and then worry about being judged.

What tools do you teach in grief & loss counseling?

People dealing with grief struggle with having to deal with their pain, often over and over again. After a loss, life comes to a stop, then restarts with a lot of changes. Often, people must deal with the practical task of restarting life. So, I often find myself helping grieving people tolerate distress and make practical plans.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in grief & loss counseling?

I often see clients making meaningful progress when they are grieving but not overwhelmed. For many people, accepting the loss feels like a betrayal of what was lost. Accepting the change while still honoring the loss is a difficult balance to find.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement grief & loss counseling?

Clients who have lost someone important often find themselves grieving 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Some grieving people need to work to engage in daily life despite feeling grief. Others seem to need to set aside daily life and stop avoiding their feelings. Either way, it’s difficult.

What should someone do to prepare for starting grief & loss counseling?

To prepare for grief counseling, most people need to be ready to feel a lot of pain during their first few sessions. Set aside extra time after your first few sessions, as it may take a minute to find your “game face” again. Be prepared for mixed and sometimes surprising emotional reactions.

Grief & loss counseling FAQs

What type of counseling is needed when a person cannot get over the grief of losing a loved one?

Grief and loss counseling helps people grieve difficult losses including the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the end of a relationship. It helps people navigate their grief process and eventually accept, understand, and move forward from their loss. Thriveworks grief therapists in North Little Rock, AR have specific experience, training, and skills that enable them to best support grieving individuals.

How does grief and loss counseling work?

Grief and loss counseling isn’t one-size-fits-all, but it involves sharing about your loss and then working with your counselor to acknowledge and accept your new reality in its wake. Your provider at Thriveworks in North Little Rock, AR will design your treatment plan around your unique needs and goals for therapy, applying the counseling techniques that best support them.

Signs I should seek grief counseling

If you have recently experienced an event like the death of a loved one, a breakup or divorce, the loss of a job, or another major life change, then you may want to seek grief and loss counseling. Grief can be caused by many experiences and events, so if you feel that you are having trouble moving on from a certain event or find that it is still impacting your life and functioning, grief and loss counseling can help you process it more effectively so that you can move on and once again find fulfillment and satisfaction in your life.

What counseling theory is best for grief?

There are many counseling theories for treating grief, one of the most frequently used being the dual process model of grief which helps people acknowledge who or what they’ve lost through rumination while also adjusting to the new roles and identities that this loss has now placed on them. There are also many commonly used therapy approaches used in grief and loss counseling, including Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and traumatic grief therapy.

Is grief counseling conducted in person or online?

Grief & loss counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does grief counseling last?

For many, grief and loss counseling lasts for about 6 months. For others, it may last shorter or longer, depending on the severity of their loss and their grief.

having the opportunity to gain trust and reassurance to straight up drop my overfilled emotional dumpster of emotional problems on someone who is willing to listen means so much to me when it comes to being a weekly regular. Also having that small fridge in the lobby is pretty cool because theres always options on sodas too which is definitely casually enjoyable. the environment in the lobby is always very calming less like a waiting room and more like a save room to catch my breath from trying to rush to not be late for my appointments. id like to add how important it is to have a consistent therapist as well, i grew up with therapists here and there consistently swapping in and out before and always had to start from scratch with life events that resulted in me just giving up trying to get therapy let alone care enough to open up to get anyone to understand me. which ultimately lead me up to who i am today as for my current therapist, id say its really comfy and reassuring knowing someone who understands where the life story is so far as my events and experiences are kept track of to see my progress of personal development. its very important understanding and fleshing out details of my issues and life events with my therapist to learn different perspectives from a zoomed out scale to comprehend and dissect aspects of the "why's and what next steps" to aim for a healthy direction on what level of momentum is needed for my next personal quests and self development, its not just a sit down and pour my heart out session and pay a fee whatever but its more of a metaphorical way of expressing how i can put my own psychological puzzle together and where pieces go and what pieces are needed to complete the puzzle. being real with yall i felt like an absolute mess of emotions like an overfilled dumpster of problems when i first started going to sessions, thriveworks helped me realize im not the metaphorical dumpster of emotional problems but rather to BE the dump truck driver taking on the ambitious goal of needing to haul off the dumpster and dispose of my emotional problems in a clean safe efficient way to make sure i dont let my problems overfill and fester more health hazards for myself and others. Id say i wouldnt be where i am without thriveworks and including a shoutout to my therapist Mr.Luebben for being incredible at listening and helping with the exhausting amount of excessive problems ive endured within my life. From the consistency, care and comfort, to the sodas in the lobby id recommend thriveworks to anybody who crosses my path when they need as much help as i did.

Jim has been a great therapist for me. Initially I was going to speak to him on my first visit about changing to a female therapist. He was so easy to talk to that the idea of that flew right out the window.
