Award-winning therapy & psychiatry
My go-to approach for helping people in couples/marriage counseling is a mixture of the Gottman Method, CBT, and a touch of attachment theory. I prefer being eclectic because this combination appears to be helpful, along with a few others depending on the couple's needs.
I teach the following tools in couples/marriage counseling:
I know a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling when they are having more eye contact and sitting closer together in the sessions. Also, when they are working hard to use the communication tools they learned.
Clients can supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling by maintaining their engagement outside of sessions, using communication tools naturally at home, and spending quality time with each other.
To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling session, you can remind yourself that things will be difficult before they get easier. Stay in therapy, because it will turn around. The couple should think about being completely honest in the sessions. The way therapy helps you is truly based on what you're willing to put into it.
Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:
Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.
Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.
On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.
No couple goes through life without any rough patches. Whether your communication is off, someone feels like they are putting in more work, or there’s a major life event that is causing a rift in your relationship, there is always something that goes wrong. While some issues are easy to tackle on your own, there are times when things get too hard to do alone. That’s when it’s time to reach out for the help of a couples therapist.
The good news is that if you and your partner need help improving or preserving the quality of your relationship, a couples therapist at Thriveworks Lawrenceville in Sugarloaf can assist you. These mental health professionals specialize in helping couples just like you resolve their problems to create a happier, healthier relationship. There is an endless amount of reasons why you and your partner might be seeking out the help of a couples therapist. Here is a list of some of the common ones:
Many couples struggle to communicate their needs, while others are left heartbroken while one partner cheats on another. No two couples are alike, and no two treatment plans are alike. We can help you tackle whatever problem you’re facing.
Alongside providing support and an unbiased opinion, your therapist can offer beneficial tips for maintaining a strong relationship moving forward. Yes, it is important to overcome the problems in your way. However, it’s also important to understand how to defuse future problems before they get out of hand. You can expect to discuss the following during your sessions:
