As a clinician with lived experience balancing caregiving, resilience, and rebuilding, I understand the deep need for safety, compassion, and a place to breathe.
I am a registered mental health counselor intern (RMHCI) with 1 year of experience supporting adults navigating trauma, chronic stress, burnout, relationship challenges, and major life transitions. I often work with individuals who feel overwhelmed, stuck in survival mode, or disconnected from themselves, as well as high-functioning clients who have spent years prioritizing others and are seeking clarity, balance, and emotional grounding.
I earned my master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from Capella University. My clinical background includes work in outpatient, community, and school-based settings. I use a trauma-informed, nervous-system-aware approach that integrates mindfulness-based practices, parts work, and somatic awareness to support emotional regulation and insight.
You do not have to navigate this alone. I strive to create a safe, compassionate space where you feel heard, supported, and empowered to understand your patterns, process unresolved experiences, and build healthier relationships with yourself and others. When you are ready, I invite you to take the next step toward the care you deserve.

Ricky: My preferred approach for couples/marriage counseling is Gottman therapy. It's a research-based approach aimed at helping partners build and maintain healthy, long-lasting relationships.
Kesha: My go-to approach for helping people in couples/marriage counseling is to foster understanding, build healthy communication, and encourage each person to believe their feelings are valid. I prefer using role play and psychoeducation, because what better way to let someone realize how they act/look than to reflect it back to them?
Ricky: I teach the following tools in couples/marriage counseling when using Gottman therapy:
Kesha: "I teach the following tools in couples/marriage counseling: 1. Active listening 2. Conflict resolution 3. Love languages 4. Intimacy 5. Mindfulness"
Ricky: In Gottman therapy, meaningful progress in couples or marriage counseling can be assessed through various indicators reflecting positive relationship changes such as a decrease in negative interaction patterns, an increase in positive interaction patterns, improved conflict resolution, enhanced friendship and intimacy, development of rituals and shared meaning, building trust and commitment, application of skills outside of therapy, and increased satisfaction and happiness.
Kesha: I know a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling when they come back and tell me how well the tools they have learned are working and when I see them interact positively with each other, session after session.
Ricky: Couples are often given homework assignments to practice the skills learned in therapy outside of sessions. These assignments may involve engaging in structured conversations, practicing relaxation techniques, or implementing strategies for building emotional connections.
Kesha: "Clients can supplement their time in couples counseling with: -Journaling: Writing about thoughts, feelings, and wishes related to the relationship can provide valuable insights and help couples reflect on their interactions. -Communication exercises: Engaging in active listening and practicing effective communication techniques, such as ""I"" statements, can improve understanding and reduce conflict"
Ricky: Preparing for couples/marriage therapy can help you maximize your treatment experience. I would suggest that you:
Kesha: To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling session, you can set clear goals together. Discuss with your partner what you both hope to achieve from the sessions, identify key issues you want to address, and think about the relationship you want to have and the type of partner you want to be.
Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:
Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.
Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.
On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.
Giving everything you have to a relationship, in good times and bad, often means asking for help. Couples therapy is a place where many life partners find safety and care so that they can see their relationship clearly. When the best path forward is to continue the relationship as friends, therapists can even help the couple make that transition when needed.
Thriveworks Jacksonville offers couples therapy, and our therapists, counselors, and psychologists have provided that safe space for many partners. We have worked with couples who are experiencing the strain and drama of being in a relationship, and our professionals have helped them find a better place, both as individuals and as a couple. Schedule your first couples therapy appointment today.

These common relational problems are also opportunities for partners to grow individually and for their relationship to improve. Although growth and change are rarely easy tasks, they are usually worth the pain, and no couple has to face the growth process alone. Couples therapists are often able to guide the process of relational improvement by…
