My preferred resource for treating anxiety is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), considered the gold standard for treating anxiety. I find that it helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors contributing to their anxiety.
My go-to approach focuses on a combination of evidence-based therapeutic techniques tailored to the individual's needs. I use:·Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): CBT is a cornerstone of depression treatment. I work with clients to identify negative thought patterns and cognitive distortions contributing to their depression. Through cognitive restructuring, clients learn to challenge and reframe negative thoughts, replacing them with more balanced and realistic perspectives.·Motivational interviewing (MI): MI can help clients explore and resolve ambivalence about change, increase motivation for positive behavior change, and enhance engagement in treatment.
When treating anxiety, I often use a combination of approaches tailored to the individual. For example, I will teach the benefits of regular exercise, adequate sleep, healthy eating habits, and stress management techniques like meditation or yoga to help reduce anxiety symptoms.
In depression counseling, I teach the following tools:
I know a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy when there is a measurable decrease in symptoms, improved coping skills, increased insight and awareness, and behavioral changes.
I know a client is making meaningful progress by observing changes and assessing their overall well-being. Indicators that a client may be making meaningful progress include:
Clients can supplement their time in therapy for anxiety by doing a combination of coping skills. Among the many coping skills that I teach are:
Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling with:
To prepare for your first anxiety therapy session, you can reflect on your personal goals, research the therapist (find a good fit), prepare questions ahead of time, set realistic expectations of therapy, and have an open mindset. I remind my clients that seeking therapy is a positive step toward improving their mental health, and it's okay to feel nervous or unsure at first. Be patient with yourself as you navigate the therapy process and trust that progress is possible with time and effort.
Preparing ahead of time for therapy for depression can help you make the most of your treatment experience. I would suggest that you:
