I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor with 14 years of experience helping individuals navigate anxiety, depression, trauma, and life transitions. I have spent over a decade working in nonprofits with people living under various forms of oppression, such as poverty and homelessness. I bring my experience as a therapy survivor who found healing both in and out of traditional mental health treatment, and as my work examining and deconstructing systems of oppression in myself and life. The person that fits for my experience is someone who has a curiosity and open mindedness toward themselves and their life, who likes to laugh (especially if the joke is a bit off color), who understands or is curious about how society and culture shape us, and who wants to live their most authentic life.

I am a licensed master social worker (LMSW) with 10 years of experience supporting children, adolescents, adults, and families. My go-to approach for treating anxiety is cognitive behavioral therapy. I find the best benefit in cognitive behavioral therapy because anxiety is caused for a number of reasons, but usually leads to a place of overthinking and worrying, which leads to negative behaviors or feelings. Cognitive behavioral therapy is about how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors all interact, so it can be vital in breaking down where the anxiety comes from and how to best deal with it.
My go-to approach for treating depression is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I prefer to utilize cognitive behavioral therapy as it is so important to figure out what thoughts are causing the feelings and behaviors that the client is having. Once we know the thoughts that put you in a negative place we can better plan on how to improve those thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

I know a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy when their anxiety symptoms begin to decrease and they find themselves being more prone to do the things that they could not bring themselves to do before.

It is very important for a client to supplement their time in anxiety therapy by utilizing and practicing the anxiety-reducing tools and coping skills outside of sessions. The more you use them, the easier they are to use, especially in a difficult situation.
Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling by practicing the things discussed in therapy and working on building their support network to have people to talk to about the things upsetting them.
To prepare for your first anxiety therapy session, just try to relax — I will provide you with the most calming atmosphere I can, and if you come into the session not ready to discuss something, that is ok, we will change topics until you are ready. I may push you at times, but only when I think you are ready to handle it.

There is a reason you feel the way you do and these are the things that you will need to process in therapy, open up with your therapist and you can begin the healing process.
