Discover how starting couples/marriage therapy can support your own journey toward a happier, more fulfilling life.
My go-to approach for helping people in couples/marriage counseling is a mixture of motivational interviewing and CBT. I find it is critical within couples counseling to meet clients where they are and help them gain a better understanding of how each other's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors interact within themselves and with each other in order to stabilize and strengthen a relationship.
Tools I teach to couples are active listening (knowing how to listen and gain a better understanding of each other and how each other feels), fair fighting rules (“rules” put in place to help better frame a tough discussion and hopefully lead to more productive communication), and love languages (understanding how each other shows and feels love), as well as more — these are just some of the typical ones.
I know a couple is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling when they are gaining a better understanding of each other and are becoming more aligned in the goals they have for their relationship, whatever they may be.
For me, the most important thing couples can do to supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling is to communicate with each other. In couples counseling, you have to learn things about each other so that you can use them in your day-to-day lives. If a couple is not attempting to really communicate outside of sessions, it is hard to tell how effective the skills are for the couple and if a change of course is needed.
To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling session, you should have a good understanding of how you currently feel about the relationship and be willing to share it. Sometimes this can be very hard, as many couples who come into couples counseling are not feeling great about the relationship, but things that are not discussed or brought up cannot be worked on. This is no time to be shy — if you want a problem to change or get better, this is the place to start the conversation.
Couples therapy and marriage counseling, also known as relationship counseling, helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy and marriage counseling include:
The types of therapy used in couples and marriage counseling include:
At Thriveworks, Couples/marriage therapy is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples.

Marriage and couples counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.
On average, couples attend marriage and couples counseling for 12 weeks. However, couples & marriage counseling may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.
At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

Are you worried about what other people might think if they find out that you’re in couples therapy? We understand the reservations that you might have. However, if you think that your relationship could find strength and renewal in therapy, we encourage you to give it a try. There is nothing to be afraid of or ashamed of.
