My go-to approach for helping kids in child therapy is to take on the perspective that I am planting seeds for change. Some will grow to full bloom during the child's time in therapy, and other seeds may take years to begin to grow with due time and natural maturity. In child sessions, I often utilize play therapy techniques to build rapport, encourage change and shifts in perspective, and validate emotions while guiding toward more ideal behaviors. I take the approach that, although the child is my individual client, involving their family and legal caregivers throughout aspects of the treatment process is imperative to fully support growth and change.

I know a client is making meaningful progress in child therapy when they can show either verbally or through behaviors that they have made progress towards goals that the child, parents, and myself come up with. Sometimes this progress happens in the therapy room itself, while other times the child, their parents, their family, or their teachers may report seeing this progress.
For many children, play is their language and toys are their tools. In their personal time, clients can supplement their time in child therapy by engaging in play. For older children, this can look like quality time spent with close friends, engagement in self-chosen hobbies/sports, and other forms of play.
To prepare a child for their first therapy session, it is important that the adult/caregiver understands that, just like in adult therapy, their child may have varying emotions after each session. In preparation for the intake, I encourage both the adult and child to spend a brief amount of time thinking about two things they would like to see improved in their life. Beyond this, all that is needed to prepare is to schedule the appointment — the rest will come in due time!

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state.
