What is your go-to approach for PTSD/trauma therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in PTSD/trauma therapy is a combination of internal family systems (IFS) and mindfulness-based techniques. I prefer this approach because it provides a gentle and non-invasive approach to trauma processing while also providing tools for emotional regulation and self-awareness.

What tools do you teach in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I teach the following tools in PTSD/trauma therapy:

  • Parts work: PTSD often involves fragmentation of the self, where parts of the individual hold onto traumatic memories and emotions. IFS helps clients identify and work with these parts in a safe and structured manner. By externalizing and dialoguing with these parts, clients can develop a deeper understanding of their inner experiences and begin to integrate them more fully into their sense of self.
  • Trauma processing: IFS provides a gentle and non-invasive approach to trauma processing. Rather than re-experiencing the trauma directly, clients can explore their traumatic memories and emotions from a distance with the support of their therapist and their internal self. This can help mitigate the risk of re-traumatization while still allowing for healing and resolution.
  • Self-leadership: One of the core principles of IFS is the concept of the self, which represents the core essence of an individual — their wisdom, compassion, and authenticity. By strengthening their connection to their self, clients with PTSD can develop greater self-leadership and resilience in the face of trauma-related symptoms.
They learn to access their innate resources and navigate challenging situations with greater clarity and confidence.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy when they've increased their awareness of their thoughts, emotions, and behavioral patterns. Clients may gain insight into the origins of their trauma-related symptoms and begin to recognize the ways in which past experiences impact their present-day functioning.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement PTSD/trauma therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in PTSD/trauma therapy by engaging in daily mindfulness meditation. This can help clients cultivate present-moment awareness, reduce stress, and regulate their emotions. Apps like Headspace or Insight Timer offer guided meditations specifically tailored to trauma survivors.

Thriveworks Counseling & Psychiatry Colorado Springs can be found off of Mark Dabling Blvd at the end of the Pike's Peak Research Center, just past Adobe Hospice. Our building is located just west of Pulpit Rock Park, and we share a building with Helix Semiconductors, First Affirmative Financial, SocialSEO, and others.
