Kayla Thompson is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) who’s passion lies with couples and individuals with concerns about life transitions, anxiety, grief, and trauma. Kayla also works collaboratively with individuals and couples struggling with substance abuse, addictions, and unhealthy coping habits. Kayla is informed in mindfulness, anxiety, Internal Family Systems, trauma, and nutrition for mental health.
Kayla utilizes an integrated approach highlighting certain aspects in Internal Family Systems, cognitive behavioral techniques, and narrative based approaches. She believes humans are social beings who all need a sense of belonging and the past uncovers aspects that are affecting the present. There are often so many cliches to counseling; “feeling stuck” or “how to empower you.” Both which can be true and also a reminder the only reason you need to attend counseling is because you want to.
Kayla always enjoys watching clients transform into their true selves. She understands from personal experience that some transitions are painful/confusing and expressing yourself can be challenging. Her philosophies include helping clients work towards a healthier and happier lifestyle and to help them develop beneficial outlets and coping skills. Through Kayla’s warmth and outward empathy she strives to be a supportive, inspiring, and at times a challenging counselor to help her client’s achieve their goals.
You deserve dedicated time with a mental health professional — it can be life-changing.

My go-to approach for helping people in individual therapy is an integrated approach, meaning I adapt to the client on what works best for them based on their unique needs. However, I do enjoy and find benefit in the internal family systems approach, because many people say things like, “a part of me wants/loves/feels ____, and another part of me doesn't like that.” Sometimes, it really makes sense and fits well with people to better understand themselves.
I teach the following tools in individual therapy:
I know a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy when their body language and presentation change. The body can demonstrate a lot more than we are able to verbalize, such as sitting up taller and speaking more confidently and comfortably.
Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy by doing what they love and believe is important to them! It can be anything, such as journaling, creating music/art, spending time with family/loved ones, or sports/exercising.
To prepare for your first individual therapy session, you can take a minute to jot down things that you want to get out of counseling and figure out an answer to the question: How do you know if therapy works for you?
Individual therapy, also known as Individual therapy, allows people to engage in private sessions with a skilled therapist, counselor, or psychologist. The core objective of individual therapy is to establish a secure and confidential setting where you can openly discuss whatever emotional, psychological, or behavioral challenges you face. Through these one-on-one sessions, the client and therapist work together to delve into, comprehend, and ultimately find solutions for the issues at hand in their life.
Individual therapy unfolds in a structured process, commencing with an initial assessment in which the therapist gathers essential information about your history, concerns, and objectives. Together, you and your therapist collaboratively establish specific, attainable goals for your sessions, which can encompass symptom alleviation, personal development, or finding solutions to particular challenges.
Yes, individual therapy, also known as Individual therapy, at Thriveworks can help you to improve your mental health and overall quality of life.
Individual therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
The duration of your individual therapy sessions will vary. The decision on the number and frequency of sessions is typically collaboratively determined by the client and therapist.
