As an African American Christian woman who was raised by two military parents with big families, I have experienced a variety of cultures, loss, blended families, and even divorce which has opened the door to wisdom, insight, and unconditional understanding in the counseling setting.
I am Dr. B, Dr. Bertresh, Dr. London or Dr. Nunez, and I have dual licenses as a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of Virginia. I have been working with children, families, couples, and individuals for over 30 years. In that time, I have found from working with couples that I help serve as their translator to increase communication, understanding, and connection. With individuals, I've helped them thrive by overcoming and significantly decreasing anxiety, anger, depression, lack of motivation, social anxiety, and difficulties communicating.
As your clinician, we will personalize your treatment and utilize your strengths, resources, and passions to help overcome struggles. This means that I will help you manage unwanted thoughts, implement coping skills, learn social skills, reframe triggers, become more assertive, and increase mindfulness resulting in less unwanted symptoms.

My focus for helping individuals in couples and marriage counseling is to provide opportunities for improved communication, the resolution of challenges, and a better understanding of one another. I find benefit in this approach because it establishes trust, understanding, and a more secure sense of attachment and connection.
I teach DBT tools that focus on emotional self-regulation, as well as conflict management and communication skills. I also provide tools based on emotionally focused therapy to improve an understanding of emotions, communication patterns, attachment styles, and consequent connections to one another.
I know clients are making progress when they develop insight and recognize ways in which they are better able to understand and respond to one another through improved connection and communication. They also demonstrate progress when they are able to implement the skills into daily practice.
I encourage my clients to increase individual holistic self-care and provide opportunities for quality time with one another. They are also encouraged to practice techniques presented in sessions.
Couples can discuss what goals they would like to attain, as well as explore ways in which they can prepare to be more transparent and open with one another.
Couples therapy and marriage counseling, also known as relationship counseling, helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy and marriage counseling include:
The types of therapy used in couples and marriage counseling include:
At Thriveworks, Couples/marriage therapy is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples.
The Gottman Method of couples therapy is a research-supported approach designed to enhance relationships by bolstering the bond between partners, resolving conflicts, and fostering shared meaning in their relationship through comprehensive assessments and tailored interventions that improve communication, trust, and the overall health of the partnership.
If you’re facing persistent relationship problems, communication breakdowns, or unresolved conflicts that are impacting your emotional well-being and happiness, Couples/marriage therapy may be beneficial for you.
While marriage and couple’s counseling is typically recommended for couples who are experiencing persistent or severe relationship issues, any relationship can benefit from attending these sessions.
Marriage and couples counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.
On average, couples attend marriage and couples counseling for 12 weeks. However, couples & marriage counseling may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.
At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. Four couples head off to a week of vacation—with a catch. In the movie, Couples Retreat, a wife and husband are considering separation, and they persuade their friends to join them in paradise for a couples retreat. If they go together, they can qualify for a group rate, and they have no intention of going to the therapeutic activities. They arrive, ready for a week of beach time, yoga classes, and massages, but they are told that the 6 AM couples skill building class is not optional. Neither is any of the other therapy. “I think there is a misunderstanding here. We signed up for the fun stuff,” Vince Vaughn’s character says. “So we have to give a little bit of our day up to talk about feelings. How bad couple it be?” The couples learn quickly that improving their marriage takes a lot of work, but it is worth their efforts, even if it means missing beach time.
