Dr. Brooks began his career in mental health and addictions counseling in 1992. Populations he has served have been just as varied—addictions (both substance abuse and behavioral), mental health, individuals & families, adoption, indigent persons, athletes, executives, and professionals. He has held faculty positions at 6 universities and colleges in psychology and counseling programs.
Dr. Brooks earned his bachelor's in Psychology from East Carolina University, his master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling and a master's in Substance Abuse Counseling from ECU. He completed his academic career at NCSU where he received his Ph.D. in Counselor Education & Supervision. Dr. Brooks worked full-time as a therapist while in school and brings a wealth of practical as well as academic experiences to his practice. The number of life coaching sessions someone attends can differ based on the coach and the client’s choices. How many sessions are needed and how often they occur often hinges on the client’s objectives and the complexity of their concerns. Some clients might opt for a few sessions to tackle particular goals or issues, while others may decide on ongoing coaching sessions to work on personal growth and life enhancement over a more extended period of time. Thriveworks Chapel Hill therapists work with clients to create goals and potential timelines for treatment.
Life coaches and high school football coaches may not be so different. In both settings, coaches need to know their team’s and clients’ weaknesses and strengths. Coaches help their teams and clients formulate a game plan: a way to fortify those weaknesses and capitalize on those strengths. Coaches can read a context and guide their teams or clients on the next steps. Whether they are football coaches or life coaches, success is often supported by a good coach.
Thriveworks Counseling in Chapel Hill offers life coaching, and our professionals have helped many people find the encouragement, guidance, inspiration, and support they need.

The end result of goal-setting and life coaching may be a dramatic achievement, but the daily reality is often mundane. Long-term success often requires short-term sacrifice. Seth Godin puts in this way, “Set a goal, and in small, consistent steps, work to reach it. Get support from your peers when you start flagging. Repeat. You will change.” How can goals change people? When people set goals and they have the support of a life coach to achieve those goals, a few key things may happen…
One of the benefits of working with a life coach is that clients can explore any area of their lives where they need mentoring, guiding, and support.
