Jill Hughes is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 20 years of experience in counseling and care management. She has worked with children, adolescents, adults, and aging clients in individual, couples, family, and group therapy to address concerns about the self and relationships. Jill specializes in depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, relationship issues, and major life transitions and has additionally trained to work with clients experiencing the symptoms and effects of OCD, TBI, and PTSD.
Jill completed her Master of Social Work (MSW) degree at The University of Georgia and obtained her T-5 Teaching Certificate in Georgia, the equivalent of a master's level teaching degree, from Piedmont University. She began her professional career working with adults in protective services and children in foster care and understands the emotional needs of the individual requiring care as well as the person and/or family responsible for that care. In addition, Jill has a background in medical social services and is passionate about helping adults and children that are managing chronic illnesses and conditions which impact daily function, long-term health, and quality of life. She utilizes a collaborative and integrative counseling approach which includes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT,) solution-focused brief therapy, motivational interviewing, and mindfulness to address and ameliorate emotional issues and concerns.

They’re given clear instructions on how to improve their angry behavior as well as a safe space for opening up about their emotions.
Once an individual’s triggers are identified, anger management therapy focuses on helping the individual process and respond to these emotions in a more positive and productive manner. Everyone feels anger – it’s just an emotion after all – but not everyone has significant consequences as a result of the behavior they exhibit when they’re angry. Learning to control anger can seem impossible but there is help out there in the form of anger counseling. Many people fail when trying to control their own anger because their goal is to stop feeling angry. The reality is that this is an unreasonable expectation. The goal shouldn’t be not to feel angry – it should be to learn how to deal with anger.
Anger counseling is a personalized experience and the right treatment plan will vary for each individual. However, it often begins by assessing anger levels, the frequency with which a person feels angry, and the ways a person deals with that anger.
Steps are then taken to take a closer look at the causes of the anger. Is it based on internal feelings or external situations? Do memories bring it up? When a counselor can understand why their client is feeling anger they can help them dig deeper to address those causes.
Having goals is an important part of counseling. The goals of each individual will depend on their situation and expectations but some common anger counseling goals include recognizing things that trigger anger, learning how to respond to these triggers, and noticing and acknowledging situations in which the individual didn’t react logically when they got angry.
Part of a counselor’s job is to teach their clients that dealing with their anger doesn’t mean they most roll over and put up with whatever others throw at them. Instead, clients learn healthy ways to assert themselves and make their needs known.
