Sherene Becca Robins is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Kacie: A go-to approach for helping kids in child therapy is dependent on age. For younger children (ages 3-12), Play Therapy is a beneficial evidence-based practice to identify patterns of behavior, thoughts, and emotions. Play Therapy allows the child to naturally and freely express in a safe, nonjudgmental, space.
Melissa: My go-to approach in helping children reach their counseling goals is cognitive behavioral therapy to help children cope with big emotions such as anxiety, depression, and loss around change.
Kacie: Children in Play Therapy can expect to play with a variety of toys and have their own direction of session, which can lead to more empowerment and responsibility over certain behaviors, developing coping strategies, identifying problem-solving skills, self-respect and validation, empathy, expression of thought and emotion, and stronger social skills. Additionally, parents/guardians can expect to gain different tools to work with their child outside of session to further encourage their social-emotional growth.
Melissa: I teach the following tools in child therapy: thought challenging for anxiety, deep breathing for anxiety and sadness, and coping with change by stating what is in their control to do now.
Kacie: I know a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy when they are utilizing the safe-space of the session and working through various thoughts and emotions with play. Additionally, it is evident that the work is beneficial when behavioral changes are made outside of the play room.
Melissa: A child is making meaningful progress in therapy when they are able to identify their emotions and complete coping skills with an adult's help to increase emotional understanding and management.
Kacie: Parents/Guardians can support the progress of their child's work by collaborating with the clinician on tools to utilize at home and outside of session, since they have more day-to-day contact with the child.
Melissa: To supplement child therapy, parents can encourage positive self-talk, a positive mindset, and problem-solving skills.
Kacie: Let the child know that they will have their own play time with (clinician's name). It is encouraged to acknowledge that the child has big feelings and they get to have a safe-space to play and explore. [Conversely, it is not encouraged to approach therapy as a punishment (e.g. “You have to go because you are ___.”)]
