My go-to approach for treating depression is cognitive therapy. I find the best benefit in cognitive therapy because our thoughts are connected to our moods and behaviors. When we are depressed, we tend to have negative thoughts about ourselves (self-criticism), our experiences (pessimism), and our future (hopelessness).
I teach the following tools in depression counseling:
I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when they are able to report an increased interest in regular activities, decreased apathy and/or anhedonia, and a reduction in feelings of sadness, emptiness, and hopelessness.
Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling by tracking their activities and feelings of depression. They might discover that they are less active when they are most depressed. Afterward, they can increase their engagement in activities that are most pleasurable, lead to a sense of accomplishment, help us approach rather than avoid things, or reflect their values.
To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can prepare a list of therapeutic goals you would like to work toward over the course of therapy.
