Personality Disorder Therapy in Washington, DC

Having a personality disorder can feel isolating but according to the American Psychological Association, as many as 3 out of 10 patients who seek help for mental health issues have some type of personality disorder. If you’re one of these people, consider reaching out to Thriveworks Washington DC. We’re here to help you.

List of Personality Disorder Types

Today most personality disorders fall into one of three groups:

  1. Anxious and fearful behaviors are classified into one group, which includes obsessive-compulsive personality disorder as well as an avoidant personality disorder.
  2. Borderline personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder are both examples of personality disorders categorized by dramatic, emotional, and erratic behaviors.
  3. Patients with schizoid personality disorder, paranoid personality disorder, and other disorders categorized by eccentric and / or odd behavior are in one group.

While most personality disorders fall under one of these categories there are some that defy categorization.

How Does Personality Disorder Treatment Work?

It’s true that every client has unique needs but it’s also true that most treatment plans for personality disorders begin with getting the client’s emotions controlled. This can include talk therapy and / or medications.

People with a personality disorder often need to deal with their core beliefs, which are beliefs they hold about themselves, someone close to them, or the world and these beliefs are both rigid and inflexible. Generally, they’re developed over time, starting in childhood, and clients are unable to see information that conflicts with these beliefs. They can only recognize things that support their beliefs.

One of the roles of a therapist is to assist clients as they learn about their core beliefs, investigate their sources, and find ways to explore them further.

I’ve really been helped by Thriveworks. I have a wonderful counselor who has been able to arm me with resources and knowledge surrounding my mental illness so I can be more prepared against my own future thoughts or environments. I’ve been able to request a different psychiatrist when one was not entirely a correct match for me, and I always get great positive feedback and respect from my mental health care professionals. It seems like they actually want you to have a good match with someone and will help you along the way.

As an educator of students with a variety of special needs, I can attest to Sam's pedigree as a counselor. He is a skillful communicator, a staunch advocate for his clients, and he demonstrates an uncanny ability to remain calm and knowledgeable despite every and any difficult situation. Sam has been an invaluable resource to me in understanding the underlying conditions and trauma that provoke certain behaviors in children. In short, he has made me a better teacher!
