Amanda: My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is accepting the unexpected. I find the best benefit in anticipating the unknown because online therapy can be tricky, just like our lives can be, and there's nothing wrong with that!
Laurie: I approach online therapy the way I do in-person therapy. My goal is to understand what you want to change and how I can help you. Online therapy is more convenient in that you can meet with me in the comfort of your own home. There is a better chance that we can start and end on time. There may be fewer cancellations. I enjoy working with individuals, couples, and families online. I think we will get just as much accomplished, if not more. I hope you will give it a try if you haven’t already.
Amanda: I teach the following tools in online therapy: Using the internet to our immediate advantage, providing in-the-moment comfort in your own home, exposure to tough situations as you face them, mindfulness, coping skills, communication skills, and a variety of other tools that fit the treatment of each individual.
Laurie: I teach communication, meditation, calming techniques, etc. I work with many different issues like anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, communication problems, and more.
Amanda: I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when they express growing satisfaction in their own lives and are able to see the progress in themselves as well.
Laurie: I know a client is making meaningful progress when they discuss the positive changes they are seeing in their life.
Amanda: Clients can supplement their time in online therapy by using tools learned in sessions in their day-to-day lives.
Laurie: I often give clients homework, which are often practices we have done in a session. If a client can practice a technique daily, they have a better chance of incorporating it into their life and experiencing progress more quickly.
Amanda: To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can think of a space that feels comfortable for you—your setting where you would like to have your at-home therapy spot.
Laurie: To prepare for therapy, it is helpful to think about specific things you want to work on. It is also helpful to relax and be open to new experiences.
With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.
Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.
There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.
Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.
Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.
At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.
Online counseling is not a new concept, but it is growing in popularity as people discover this convenient approach to counseling. This convenience, as well as the comfort and reliability that online counseling offers, are some of the primary benefits that make online counseling an appealing option! In addition, online counseling allows people to keep their identity anonymous if they so choose. This would mean choosing phone counseling over videoconference counseling. Online therapy offers all of these benefits without sacrificing any of the meaningful work people achieve in in-person counseling.
Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves.”
–Henry David Thoreau
On top of the benefits we just mentioned, online therapy is reliable. When it comes to in-person counseling, sometimes the unknown and the unpredictable gets in our way. For example, we’ve scheduled our appointment and done everything right, but then road work, bad weather conditions, or an out-of-the-blue sickness hinders our ability to make it to our session. With online counseling, you typically don’t have to worry about these obstacles (which means that you also don’t have to go through the trouble of rescheduling).
