My go-to approach for treating depression is a form of CBT therapy called reality therapy. It's based on the work of Dr. William Glasser. Depression is often the result of unmet essential needs and often underlying relationship issues. Sometimes that relationship is with another person, sometimes it's with ourselves. We talk about this and examine wants/thoughts/actions to figure out what needs to change so that we are able to experience more positive emotions. I use this approach because it is personally empowering for creating the life a person wants. I also use some physiological and nutritional interventions that can help with the autonomic nervous system.
I teach how to assess your essential needs, examine your wants, examine/challenge and reframe your thinking and actions, identify new strategies for connecting in your relationships and negotiation skills to get needs met.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when they report they are getting along better with important other people in their lives, taking things less personally, and feeling better about their future.
Client can supplement their time in depression counseling with connecting with others and finding opportunities to have fun or enjoyment. This is very important to getting our essential needs met. It's also important to do the homework assigned and practice skills discussed in treatment.
To prepare for starting depression counseling it is helpful to jot down some of the thoughts you have when feeling depressed and what actions you usually take. Also take note of any problems in relationships you are having. Be ready to also be consistent in doing the homework.

While it is essential to recognize the signs and symptoms of this mental disorder, it is just as important to talk to professionals at Thriveworks Counseling in Northeast Raleigh who can effectively evaluate, diagnose, and treat anxiety and depression.
As stated earlier, depression is very treatable. Even the most severe forms of the disorder are treatable. Typically, depression is treated with therapy, medication, or a combination of the two. A skilled therapist will be able to work closely with you and determine your specific treatment plan.
Antidepressants are medications commonly used to treat depression, but your treatment options in medication management aren’t limited to this medication type alone.
Several types of therapy can help those dealing with depression. One common type is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Therapists use CBT to help you become more aware of negative or inaccurate thinking so you can respond to future challenges in a more positive, constructive way. CBT can also help you identify ways to manage emotions, cope with grief or loss, and manage chronic physical symptoms.
Another common therapy is interpersonal therapy (IPT). This type focuses on your relationships with other people. The goal is to help you communicate more effectively with others and face problems that may contribute to your depression.
Your therapist will talk with you and focus on your immediate challenges and identify events in your life that might have led to your depression symptoms. Your therapist will then provide you with the necessary skills to manage difficult emotions in positive ways.
If you are experiencing any of the depression symptoms mentioned above or are concerned about recent negative thoughts or feelings, please call Thriveworks in Northeast Raleigh to schedule an appointment or use our online booking widget to schedule an appointment yourself.
