What is your go-to approach for family therapy?

When working with families in therapy, I explore how the dynamics and interactions of the family system contribute to presenting issues within the family unit. Communication skills development helps to improve understanding and connection among family members. Additionally, problem-solving and conflict resolution within the family system empower members to address challenges collaboratively and promote positive change.

What tools do you teach in family therapy?

I often teach the following tools when working with families

  • Mindfulness meditation or mindful activity, which involves learning to notice when the mind drifts, letting go of thinking, and returning focus to a predetermined word, phrase, image action, or sensory experience.
  • Cognitive reframing is used to explore alternative perspectives.
  • Cognitive challenging helps clients to question their thoughts and beliefs in order to uncover patterns of thinking that are no longer helpful.
  • Cognitive distraction gives clients the ability to move away from intrusive and unwanted thoughts.
  • Sensation labeling is a mindfulness technique that assists with disrupting unwanted thinking by focusing on sensory input.
  • Strategies for grief processing are used to observe, accept, experience, and release the chaos of emotions that accompany an experience of loss.
  • Mental shield imagery develops skills in managing mirror neurons to reduce emotional reactivity to other people's emotions.
  • Thinking strategies help address catastrophic thinking and increase confidence in dealing with undesired outcomes, should they arise.
  • Positive communication skills such as reflective listening, “I” statements, nonviolent communications, and positive behavior support can decrease conflict and increase skills in collaboration.
  • Motivation skills reduce procrastination and avoidance.
  • Strategies for gaining acceptance of mistakes and letting go of shame and guilt.
  • Task partialization to reduce overwhelm and procrastination.
  • Imagery and relaxation strategies for pain management and reduction of medical anxiety.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in family therapy?

I check in with the family about their progress with their goals and the improvements they are seeing in their symptoms at the beginning of every session before focusing on individual time with the client. Meaningful progress is evident as the list of progress and successes gets longer and the list of challenges gets shorter.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement family therapy?

Clients' efforts to implement the skills they are learning and the goals that they set between sessions are essential to making progress in therapy. Family efforts to support each other as everyone is learning new positive strategies for interaction further facilitate the family's progress.

What should someone do to prepare for starting family therapy?

I reserve the first session for fully exploring the parent’s concerns. They can prepare for therapy by thinking about what they want their child to achieve, in addition to what it is they want to move away from.

Starting Family therapy in Austin

What is family therapy?

Family therapy helps families resolve conflicts and strengthen their relationships. It is led by qualified mental health professionals like psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) who have extensive training in family dynamics and group communication.

How does family therapy work?

Thriveworks family therapists in Austin, TX usually begin by asking what everyone’s goals are for family counseling. Family members may need help with very specific issues or with general relationship functioning. But there are three main purposes in family counseling: to educate, to counsel, and to strengthen. Thriveworks also offers online family therapy and in-person services, so you may all meet in an office together or join a video call from your home depending on everyone’s location and availability.

What is the most effective family therapy?

The most effective form of Family therapy will often depend on the family itself, as there are many types of family therapy for therapists to use as they see fit in order to best meet the needs of their clients. However, one of the most commonly used types of family therapy is structural family therapy (SFT). SFT focuses specifically on family dynamics and interactions, looking at how they shape the relationships and structure present in the family. It can be effectively used to treat a variety of concerns.

How do I know if my family needs therapy?

This answer often looks different to each family that starts family therapy. However, some signs that your family might need to consider family counseling include frequent fights or misunderstandings, constant tension, experiencing loss, behavioral issues, marital issues, divorce, and blended family issues, among others.

What is included in family therapy?

In family therapy, therapists will often start by asking questions and assessing individual and family dynamics. From there, they may employ therapeutic techniques such as structured family therapy, CBT, strategic family therapy, and more depending on the present concerns and conflicts. From there, a therapist will work to open lines of communication between family members and facilitate emotional healing and growth.

What is the success rate of family therapy?

Family therapy can be incredibly successful, with some studies reporting a success rate of almost 90% for improving participants’ emotional and mental health, and around 66% for improving their physical health.

Is family therapy conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks therapists in Austin, TX offer both online family therapy and in-person family therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does family therapy last?

Family therapy is usually short term and solution-focused, with most families accomplishing their goals in 12 sessions or fewer. However, it can also last for longer if the probles at hand are more complex — and that’s okay, too.

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
